Cijeli "Belfast" zrcali se u jednoj od prvih scena autobiografske drame Kennetha Branagha, nominirane za sedam ovogodišnjih Oscara, uključujući najbolji film, režiju i originalni scenarij. Scena je odigrana odmah nakon vizualno efektnog uvoda, kad kamera preleti preko irskog lučkoga grada iz sunčane današnjice i vrati se u njegovu sivu prošlost 1969., a "Belfast" presvuče boju i od kolornog postane crno-bijeli.

Sredina je kolovoza, ljeto, idiličan dan. Djeca se igraju na ulicama Belfasta, u četvrti radničke klase, koristeći drvene mačeve i štitove od poklopaca kanti za smeće. Među njima je i devetogodišnji Buddy (debitant Jude Hill), mali Branagh. Mama ga zove iz kuće (glumi je divna Caitriona Balfe, kao srce filma), njegov je čaj spreman. Idilu najednom naprasno prekida pojava nadolazeće rulje. To su protestanti, naoružani Molotovljevim koktelima.

Zapaljive boce kucaju na vrata katolika, bačene na njihove kućne pragove. Ulica u trenu postaje ratna zona, vatra bukti, eksplozije odzvanjaju dižući okolne automobile u zrak. Branagh režira scenu toliko plastično da se gledatelju čini kako se sivkasti plamen gotovo zažuti unutar izvrsne crno-bijele slike redateljeva kućnog direktora fotografije Harisa Zambarloukosa.

A onda slijedi ključan trenutak za Branaghov film, njegov najosobniji/najintimniji dosad: poklopac kante za smeće, maloprije štit u benignoj dječjoj igri, postaje jedino sredstvo obrane protiv kamenja koje leti unaokolo poput ručnih bombi na ulici koju uskoro zauzimaju tenkovi i vojne trupe.

Nakon toga više ništa nije isto za Buddyja i njegovu protestantsku obitelj, mamu, tatu (dobri Jamie Dornan), starijeg brata (Lewis McAskie), baku i djeda (za Oscara nominirani Judi Dench i Ciarán Hinds, duša filma). Politički konflikt umiješao se u djetinjstvo, pokušava ga oduzeti Buddyju i ostaloj djeci, kao i život njihovim familijama i svim ostalim normalnim ljudima koji, poput njih samih, proklinju konfliktnu religiju i nije im presudan odgovor na pitanje svih pitanja u Sjevernoj Irskoj "jesi li protestant ili katolik?".

Osobno i političko/društveno prelama se u Branaghovu filmu, pozicioniranom na razmeđu intimnog i kolektivnog iskustva u obrađivanju teme odrastanja i življenja u (pred)ratno doba ili općenito nekim turbulentnim vremenima, odnosno prisjećanju na trenutke iz djetinjstva kakvi nas obilježavaju i ostaju s nama za cijeli život.

Na neki način, "Belfast" je Branaghov "Amarcord", njegova "Roma" i "The Hand of God", daleko od njegovih neintimnih, komercijalnih blockbustera kao što su "Jack Ryan: Poziv iz sjene", "Pepeljuga", "Ubojstvo u Orient Expressu", "Artemis Fowl" i "Smrt na Nilu", kakvi posljednjih desetak godina prednjače u njegovu opusu (iznimka je "Sve je istina").

Kod Branagha ima više politike u odnosu na autobiografske filmove Federica Fellinija, Alfonsa Cuarona i Paola Sorrentina, koliko god da ona većinski boravi na rubovima kadra i svako toliko prodre u njegov centar. Jer "Belfast" kronicira početak nasilnoga građanskog rata, koji se protegnuo na tri dekade pa nije čudno da je indirektno bio tema filmova u prvoj polovini devedesetih, poput "U ime oca", sugerirajući da mračna vremena tek predstoje na sjevernoirskim ulicama, gdje žive ljudi miješane religije.

Buddyjeva obitelj, znači, nije katolička, ali zamjera se protestantima budući da njegov otac ne želi zauzeti stranu i ne vidi katolike kao neprijatelje. Naprotiv, sinu će reći da ne dijeli ljude prema religiji i da je njegova školska simpatija, katolkinja Catherine (Olive Tennant), dobrodošla u njihovoj kući svakog dana u tjednu, za razliku od nekih drugih roditelja koji uče djecu prepoznati katolike prema njihovim imenima i usađuju im predrasudu od malih nogu.

Otac je razapet između ostajanja u Belfastu i napuštanja grada u kojem je živio cijeli život, odnosno emigriranja s familijom u sigurniji Vancouver i Sydney ili barem London, gdje i radi, da pobjegne što dalje od nasilja. S njegovim razmatranjem "rute za bijeg", kolebanjem i konačnom odlukom mogu se poistovjetiti svi koji su se našli u sličnoj situaciji i bili primorani napustiti dom tijekom bujanja nemira ili u zoru (građanskog) rata, od Sjeverne Irske nekad do bivše Jugoslavije u devedesetima i današnje Ukrajine, što dramu "Belfasta" čini univerzalnom i aktualnom, danas aktualnijom nego što je to bila 2021., kad je film imao premijeru.

Moguće da bi politički okvir bio još izraženiji da Branagh nije odlučio ispričati priču iz Buddyjeve perspektive, sagledati ondašnji svijet nevinijim očima djeteta, nekadašnjeg sebe, koji traži bijeg od stvarnosti, rekreirati uspomene na djetinjstvo i sačuvati neke značajne trenutke na filmu prije nego što budu izgubljeni u vremenu sjećanja.

Bijeg od stvarnosti Buddy je pronalazio u filmovima na TV-u (vesterni "Točno u podne" i "Čovjek koji je ubio Libertyja Vallancea") ili, još više, u kinu ("Milijun godina prije Krista" s Raquel Welch, fantastična obiteljska avantura "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"), glazbi (pjesma "Everlasting Love" grupe Love Affair), kazalištu ("Božićna priča") i stripovima (Marvelov "Thor", koji je Branagh i ekranizirao). Dakle, u svemu što će formirati Branagha da jednog dana postaje kazališni redatelj i filmaš.

Eskapizam kakav nude film i umjetnost Branaghu je povod da se poigra s kolorom u stilu "Sin Cityja" i da boja preplavi crno-bijelu sliku u scenama posjeta kinu i kazalištu. Sve je crno-bijelo u kadru osim koloriranog filma na ekranu i glumaca u predstavi, reflektiranih u naočalama Buddyjeve bake.

"Belfast" je ljubavno pismu filmu i slavi ga kao eskapistički, transformativan i transportirajući doživljaj, najviše u sceni gledanja "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", kad obitelj u kinu "poleti" s letećim automobilom niz liticu proživljavajući filmski 3D efekt bez 3D-a. Kao takav, "Belfast" i sam nudi bijeg od zbilje, premda od nje ne želi i ne može posve pobjeći. Završnica filma i Branaghova posveta na odjavnoj špici govori u to ime. "Za one koji su ostali. Za one koji su otišli. Za one koji su bili izgubljeni."

Oscar za originalni scenarij

"Belfast" je na kraju od sedam oskarovskih nominacija potvrdio samo jednu, ali vrijednu – za originalni scenarij Kennetha Branagha, što je prvi zlatni kipić u njegovoj karijeri.

Cijeli "Belfast" zrcali se u jednoj od prvih scena autobiografske drame Kennetha Branagha, nominirane za sedam ovogodišnjih Oscara, uključujući najbolji film, režiju i originalni scenarij. Scena je odigrana odmah nakon vizualno efektnog uvoda, kad kamera preleti preko irskog lučkoga grada iz sunčane današnjice i vrati se u njegovu sivu prošlost 1969., a "Belfast" presvuče boju i od kolornog postane crno-bijeli.

Sredina je kolovoza, ljeto, idiličan dan. Djeca se igraju na ulicama Belfasta, u četvrti radničke klase, koristeći drvene mačeve i štitove od poklopaca kanti za smeće. Među njima je i devetogodišnji Buddy (debitant Jude Hill), mali Branagh. Mama ga zove iz kuće (glumi je divna Caitriona Balfe, kao srce filma), njegov je čaj spreman. Idilu najednom naprasno prekida pojava nadolazeće rulje. To su protestanti, naoružani Molotovljevim koktelima.

Zapaljive boce kucaju na vrata katolika, bačene na njihove kućne pragove. Ulica u trenu postaje ratna zona, vatra bukti, eksplozije odzvanjaju dižući okolne automobile u zrak. Branagh režira scenu toliko plastično da se gledatelju čini kako se sivkasti plamen gotovo zažuti unutar izvrsne crno-bijele slike redateljeva kućnog direktora fotografije Harisa Zambarloukosa.

A onda slijedi ključan trenutak za Branaghov film, njegov najosobniji/najintimniji dosad: poklopac kante za smeće, maloprije štit u benignoj dječjoj igri, postaje jedino sredstvo obrane protiv kamenja koje leti unaokolo poput ručnih bombi na ulici koju uskoro zauzimaju tenkovi i vojne trupe.

Nakon toga više ništa nije isto za Buddyja i njegovu protestantsku obitelj, mamu, tatu (dobri Jamie Dornan), starijeg brata (Lewis McAskie), baku i djeda (za Oscara nominirani Judi Dench i Ciarán Hinds, duša filma). Politički konflikt umiješao se u djetinjstvo, pokušava ga oduzeti Buddyju i ostaloj djeci, kao i život njihovim familijama i svim ostalim normalnim ljudima koji, poput njih samih, proklinju konfliktnu religiju i nije im presudan odgovor na pitanje svih pitanja u Sjevernoj Irskoj "jesi li protestant ili katolik?".

Osobno i političko/društveno prelama se u Branaghovu filmu, pozicioniranom na razmeđu intimnog i kolektivnog iskustva u obrađivanju teme odrastanja i življenja u (pred)ratno doba ili općenito nekim turbulentnim vremenima, odnosno prisjećanju na trenutke iz djetinjstva kakvi nas obilježavaju i ostaju s nama za cijeli život.

Na neki način, "Belfast" je Branaghov "Amarcord", njegova "Roma" i "The Hand of God", daleko od njegovih neintimnih, komercijalnih blockbustera kao što su "Jack Ryan: Poziv iz sjene", "Pepeljuga", "Ubojstvo u Orient Expressu", "Artemis Fowl" i "Smrt na Nilu", kakvi posljednjih desetak godina prednjače u njegovu opusu (iznimka je "Sve je istina").

Kod Branagha ima više politike u odnosu na autobiografske filmove Federica Fellinija, Alfonsa Cuarona i Paola Sorrentina, koliko god da ona većinski boravi na rubovima kadra i svako toliko prodre u njegov centar. Jer "Belfast" kronicira početak nasilnoga građanskog rata, koji se protegnuo na tri dekade pa nije čudno da je indirektno bio tema filmova u prvoj polovini devedesetih, poput "U ime oca", sugerirajući da mračna vremena tek predstoje na sjevernoirskim ulicama, gdje žive ljudi miješane religije.

Buddyjeva obitelj, znači, nije katolička, ali zamjera se protestantima budući da njegov otac ne želi zauzeti stranu i ne vidi katolike kao neprijatelje. Naprotiv, sinu će reći da ne dijeli ljude prema religiji i da je njegova školska simpatija, katolkinja Catherine (Olive Tennant), dobrodošla u njihovoj kući svakog dana u tjednu, za razliku od nekih drugih roditelja koji uče djecu prepoznati katolike prema njihovim imenima i usađuju im predrasudu od malih nogu.

Otac je razapet između ostajanja u Belfastu i napuštanja grada u kojem je živio cijeli život, odnosno emigriranja s familijom u sigurniji Vancouver i Sydney ili barem London, gdje i radi, da pobjegne što dalje od nasilja. S njegovim razmatranjem "rute za bijeg", kolebanjem i konačnom odlukom mogu se poistovjetiti svi koji su se našli u sličnoj situaciji i bili primorani napustiti dom tijekom bujanja nemira ili u zoru (građanskog) rata, od Sjeverne Irske nekad do bivše Jugoslavije u devedesetima i današnje Ukrajine, što dramu "Belfasta" čini univerzalnom i aktualnom, danas aktualnijom nego što je to bila 2021., kad je film imao premijeru.

Moguće da bi politički okvir bio još izraženiji da Branagh nije odlučio ispričati priču iz Buddyjeve perspektive, sagledati ondašnji svijet nevinijim očima djeteta, nekadašnjeg sebe, koji traži bijeg od stvarnosti, rekreirati uspomene na djetinjstvo i sačuvati neke značajne trenutke na filmu prije nego što budu izgubljeni u vremenu sjećanja.

Bijeg od stvarnosti Buddy je pronalazio u filmovima na TV-u (vesterni "Točno u podne" i "Čovjek koji je ubio Libertyja Vallancea") ili, još više, u kinu ("Milijun godina prije Krista" s Raquel Welch, fantastična obiteljska avantura "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"), glazbi (pjesma "Everlasting Love" grupe Love Affair), kazalištu ("Božićna priča") i stripovima (Marvelov "Thor", koji je Branagh i ekranizirao). Dakle, u svemu što će formirati Branagha da jednog dana postaje kazališni redatelj i filmaš.

Eskapizam kakav nude film i umjetnost Branaghu je povod da se poigra s kolorom u stilu "Sin Cityja" i da boja preplavi crno-bijelu sliku u scenama posjeta kinu i kazalištu. Sve je crno-bijelo u kadru osim koloriranog filma na ekranu i glumaca u predstavi, reflektiranih u naočalama Buddyjeve bake.

"Belfast" je ljubavno pismu filmu i slavi ga kao eskapistički, transformativan i transportirajući doživljaj, najviše u sceni gledanja "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", kad obitelj u kinu "poleti" s letećim automobilom niz liticu proživljavajući filmski 3D efekt bez 3D-a. Kao takav, "Belfast" i sam nudi bijeg od zbilje, premda od nje ne želi i ne može posve pobjeći. Završnica filma i Branaghova posveta na odjavnoj špici govori u to ime. "Za one koji su ostali. Za one koji su otišli. Za one koji su bili izgubljeni."

Oscar za originalni scenarij

"Belfast" je na kraju od sedam oskarovskih nominacija potvrdio samo jednu, ali vrijednu – za originalni scenarij Kennetha Branagha, što je prvi zlatni kipić u njegovoj karijeri.
