Santa leda teška 315 milijardi tona odvojila se u ponedjeljak od velike ledene ploče Amery na Antarktici, ali se čini da taj događaj nije povezan s klimatskim promjenama, piše u ponedjeljak BBC.
Površina sante nazvane D28 iznosi 1.5 četvornih kilometara.
Stručnjaci će kretanje tako velikog ledenog bloka morati pažljivo motriti, jer bi mogla postati opasnost za plovidbu.
Od Ameryja se od ranih 1960-ih nije odvojila veća santa leda. Ona koja se tada odvalila imala je površinu devet tisuća četvornih kilometara.
Amery je treća najveća ledena ploča na Antarktici i ključan odvodni kanal za istočni dio kontinenta.
Ploče su zapravo plutajući produžetak brojnih ledenjaka koji se s kopna spuštaju u more. Odvajanje santi prirodan je proces kojim ledene ploče održavaju ravnotežu jer se tako balansira nanos novoga snijega.
Znanstvenici su stoga unaprijed znali da će doći do odvajanja, ali područje na kojem se to dogodilo nije bilo u njihovu fokusu.
Prof. Helen Fricker s Instituta za oceanografiju Scripps ističe da taj događaj nije povezan s klimatskim promjenama.
Satelitske snimke iz 1990-ih pokazuju da je Amery bio u ravnoteži, usprkos snažnom otapanju ljeti. "Iako ima puno razloga za zabrinutost za Antarktiku, zbog ove ledene ploče zasad ne treba dizati uzbunu", rekla je Fricker.
Procjenjuje se da je D28 debeo 210 metara i da sadrži oko 315 milijardi tona leda.
D28 je patuljak u usporedbi s ogromnom santom A68 koja se 2017. odvojila od ledene ploče Larsen C.
Struje i vjetrovi usmjerit će D28 zapadno te će vjerojatno proći godine do njezina potpunog otapanja, kažu stručnjaci.

Santa leda teška 315 milijardi tona odvojila se u ponedjeljak od velike ledene ploče Amery na Antarktici, ali se čini da taj događaj nije povezan s klimatskim promjenama, piše u ponedjeljak BBC.
Površina sante nazvane D28 iznosi 1.5 četvornih kilometara.
Stručnjaci će kretanje tako velikog ledenog bloka morati pažljivo motriti, jer bi mogla postati opasnost za plovidbu.
Od Ameryja se od ranih 1960-ih nije odvojila veća santa leda. Ona koja se tada odvalila imala je površinu devet tisuća četvornih kilometara.
Amery je treća najveća ledena ploča na Antarktici i ključan odvodni kanal za istočni dio kontinenta.
Ploče su zapravo plutajući produžetak brojnih ledenjaka koji se s kopna spuštaju u more. Odvajanje santi prirodan je proces kojim ledene ploče održavaju ravnotežu jer se tako balansira nanos novoga snijega.
Znanstvenici su stoga unaprijed znali da će doći do odvajanja, ali područje na kojem se to dogodilo nije bilo u njihovu fokusu.
Prof. Helen Fricker s Instituta za oceanografiju Scripps ističe da taj događaj nije povezan s klimatskim promjenama.
Satelitske snimke iz 1990-ih pokazuju da je Amery bio u ravnoteži, usprkos snažnom otapanju ljeti. "Iako ima puno razloga za zabrinutost za Antarktiku, zbog ove ledene ploče zasad ne treba dizati uzbunu", rekla je Fricker.
Procjenjuje se da je D28 debeo 210 metara i da sadrži oko 315 milijardi tona leda.
D28 je patuljak u usporedbi s ogromnom santom A68 koja se 2017. odvojila od ledene ploče Larsen C.
Struje i vjetrovi usmjerit će D28 zapadno te će vjerojatno proći godine do njezina potpunog otapanja, kažu stručnjaci.
