Kasno navečer 15. studenog 2019. godine na samoanskom otoku Upolu - maloj svijetlozelenoj mrljici u Tihom oceanu, negdje između Havaja i Novog Zelanda, vladini dužnosnici požurili su na sastanak u uspavanoj lučkoj prijestolnici kako bi razgovarali o hitnoj javnosti zdravstveni problem, javlja BBC. 

Do kraja večeri proglasili su izvanredno stanje koje je odmah stupilo na snagu. Tri mjeseca ranije jedan muškarac je dobio karakteristični crveno-smeđi pjegavi osip nakon leta avionom iz Novog Zelanda, gdje je u tijeku bila epidemija malih boginja. 

Do 2. listopada dogodilo se još sedam slučajeva, a reakcija je na početku bila neuobičajena. Škole - idealno okruženje za širenje virusa, nastavile su normalno raditi s ponekim ustupkom zabrane dodjele nagrada. Čak i tada, neki su to ignorirali. 

Samo mjesec dana kasnije, epidemija je narasla do alarmantnih razmjera sa 716 zaraženih, s ukupnom populacijom od oko 197.000.  Ali onda kada je proglašeno izvanredno stanje, zemlja je radikalno pojačala napore da zaustavi širenje zaraze. Škole i tvrtke su zatvorene, a radnici su prestali ići u urede i stanovnicima se savjetuje da ostanu kod kuće.

U zlokobnoj imitaciji crvenih križeva iscrtanih na vratima tijekom srednjovjekovnih epidemija kuge, crvene zastave počele su se vijoriti ispred kuća necijepljenih obitelji diljem zemlje, omotane oko grmlja, vezane za stupove ili obješene na drveće. To je omogućilo liječnicima da idu od kuće do kuće, dajući obavezna cjepiva onima koji su ih trebali.

U svakom drugom pogledu, Samoa je postala sablasni otok - s praznim cestama i otkazanim letovima. Širenje zaraze na kraju se usporilo, a izvanredno stanje ukinuto je 28. prosinca 2019. godine.

Epidemija je završila – ali virus nije nužno oduzeo život posljednjoj žrtvi. Tu na scenu stupa “imunološka amnezija”, misteriozni fenomen koji nas prati već tisućljećima, iako je otkriven tek 2012. godine.  Kada se zarazite malim boginjama, vaš imunološki sustav praktički zaboravlja na svaki patogen s kojim se prije susreo - svaku prehladu, svaku gripu, svako izlaganje bakterijama ili virusima u okolišu i svako cjepivo.

Male boginje (Morbili virus) su drevni respiratorni virus, koji se prenosi aerosolom i kapljicama, a smatra se da je prvi put prešao sa goveda na ljude prije otprilike 2500 godina – najvjerojatnije koristeći prepune gradove koji su se pojavili diljem planeta. Tisućljećima su male boginje proganjale svjetsku djecu – osobito u prvih nekoliko godina njihova života – zarazeći gotovo svakoga prije njegovog 15. rođendana.

Godinu dana prije nego što je cjepivo uvedeno u Velikoj Britaniji, 1967. godine, bilo je 460.407 slučajeva za koje se sumnjalo da su male boginje.

Kada su europski kolonisti prvi put prešli Atlantik, smatra se da je virus bio jedan od prvih novih uvoza - zajedno s ostalima kao što su male boginje i tifus - koji je u jednom stoljeću izbrisao 90 posto domaćeg stanovništva Amerike. Znanstvenici već desetljećima znaju da su i nakon oporavka djeca zaražena boginjama znatno podložnija bolestima i smrti od nekih drugih bolesti. Nije bilo jasno zašto su velike boginje tako snažan pokretač drugih dječjih bolesti.

Štoviše, studija iz 1995. godine pokazala je da je cijepljenje protiv virusa u narednim godinama smanjilo ukupnu vjerojatnost umiranja za između 30 i 86 posto.

- Bilo je to stvarno veliko iznenađenje u usporedbi sa svime što smo već tada znali iz udžbenika o tome kako male boginje ulaze u zaraženog domaćina, rekao je Rick De Stuart, izvanredni profesor virologije na Sveučilišnom medicinskom centru Erasmus u Nizozemskoj.

Kasno navečer 15. studenog 2019. godine na samoanskom otoku Upolu - maloj svijetlozelenoj mrljici u Tihom oceanu, negdje između Havaja i Novog Zelanda, vladini dužnosnici požurili su na sastanak u uspavanoj lučkoj prijestolnici kako bi razgovarali o hitnoj javnosti zdravstveni problem, javlja BBC. 

Do kraja večeri proglasili su izvanredno stanje koje je odmah stupilo na snagu. Tri mjeseca ranije jedan muškarac je dobio karakteristični crveno-smeđi pjegavi osip nakon leta avionom iz Novog Zelanda, gdje je u tijeku bila epidemija malih boginja. 

Do 2. listopada dogodilo se još sedam slučajeva, a reakcija je na početku bila neuobičajena. Škole - idealno okruženje za širenje virusa, nastavile su normalno raditi s ponekim ustupkom zabrane dodjele nagrada. Čak i tada, neki su to ignorirali. 

Samo mjesec dana kasnije, epidemija je narasla do alarmantnih razmjera sa 716 zaraženih, s ukupnom populacijom od oko 197.000.  Ali onda kada je proglašeno izvanredno stanje, zemlja je radikalno pojačala napore da zaustavi širenje zaraze. Škole i tvrtke su zatvorene, a radnici su prestali ići u urede i stanovnicima se savjetuje da ostanu kod kuće.

U zlokobnoj imitaciji crvenih križeva iscrtanih na vratima tijekom srednjovjekovnih epidemija kuge, crvene zastave počele su se vijoriti ispred kuća necijepljenih obitelji diljem zemlje, omotane oko grmlja, vezane za stupove ili obješene na drveće. To je omogućilo liječnicima da idu od kuće do kuće, dajući obavezna cjepiva onima koji su ih trebali.

U svakom drugom pogledu, Samoa je postala sablasni otok - s praznim cestama i otkazanim letovima. Širenje zaraze na kraju se usporilo, a izvanredno stanje ukinuto je 28. prosinca 2019. godine.

Epidemija je završila – ali virus nije nužno oduzeo život posljednjoj žrtvi. Tu na scenu stupa “imunološka amnezija”, misteriozni fenomen koji nas prati već tisućljećima, iako je otkriven tek 2012. godine.  Kada se zarazite malim boginjama, vaš imunološki sustav praktički zaboravlja na svaki patogen s kojim se prije susreo - svaku prehladu, svaku gripu, svako izlaganje bakterijama ili virusima u okolišu i svako cjepivo.

Male boginje (Morbili virus) su drevni respiratorni virus, koji se prenosi aerosolom i kapljicama, a smatra se da je prvi put prešao sa goveda na ljude prije otprilike 2500 godina – najvjerojatnije koristeći prepune gradove koji su se pojavili diljem planeta. Tisućljećima su male boginje proganjale svjetsku djecu – osobito u prvih nekoliko godina njihova života – zarazeći gotovo svakoga prije njegovog 15. rođendana.

Godinu dana prije nego što je cjepivo uvedeno u Velikoj Britaniji, 1967. godine, bilo je 460.407 slučajeva za koje se sumnjalo da su male boginje.

Kada su europski kolonisti prvi put prešli Atlantik, smatra se da je virus bio jedan od prvih novih uvoza - zajedno s ostalima kao što su male boginje i tifus - koji je u jednom stoljeću izbrisao 90 posto domaćeg stanovništva Amerike. Znanstvenici već desetljećima znaju da su i nakon oporavka djeca zaražena boginjama znatno podložnija bolestima i smrti od nekih drugih bolesti. Nije bilo jasno zašto su velike boginje tako snažan pokretač drugih dječjih bolesti.

Štoviše, studija iz 1995. godine pokazala je da je cijepljenje protiv virusa u narednim godinama smanjilo ukupnu vjerojatnost umiranja za između 30 i 86 posto.

- Bilo je to stvarno veliko iznenađenje u usporedbi sa svime što smo već tada znali iz udžbenika o tome kako male boginje ulaze u zaraženog domaćina, rekao je Rick De Stuart, izvanredni profesor virologije na Sveučilišnom medicinskom centru Erasmus u Nizozemskoj.

Kasno navečer 15. studenog 2019. godine na samoanskom otoku Upolu - maloj svijetlozelenoj mrljici u Tihom oceanu, negdje između Havaja i Novog Zelanda, vladini dužnosnici požurili su na sastanak u uspavanoj lučkoj prijestolnici kako bi razgovarali o hitnoj javnosti zdravstveni problem, javlja BBC. 

Do kraja večeri proglasili su izvanredno stanje koje je odmah stupilo na snagu. Tri mjeseca ranije jedan muškarac je dobio karakteristični crveno-smeđi pjegavi osip nakon leta avionom iz Novog Zelanda, gdje je u tijeku bila epidemija malih boginja. 

Do 2. listopada dogodilo se još sedam slučajeva, a reakcija je na početku bila neuobičajena. Škole - idealno okruženje za širenje virusa, nastavile su normalno raditi s ponekim ustupkom zabrane dodjele nagrada. Čak i tada,...
