Kad potone brod s tisuću putnika, to je takva tragedija i katastrofa da se o njoj i stoljeće kasnije snimaju filmovi. Ali kad potone čitav jedan grad, na čijem širem prostoru živi preko 20 milijuna ljudi, onda je teško uopće pronaći prave riječi.

A upravo se takva sudbina sprema Mexico Cityju, najvećem gradu zapadne hemisfere (uz São Paulo), kojeg njegovi žitelji zovu Ciudad de México. Prema najnovijem istraživanju grupe meksičkih i američkih znanstvenika, ovaj golemi grad već je toliko potonuo da ga je više nemoguće spasiti.

Kako se stoljećima neprestano odvodila voda iz podzemnih slojeva, korito jezera na kojem se grad smjestio postajalo je sve suvlje, te su glinene ploče korita počele pucati nezaustavljivom brzinom – stoji u studiji koja je nedavno, pod naslovom „Tijekom stoljeća potonuća u Mexico Cityju: Nema nade za značajno dizanje i sanaciju skladišnog kapaciteta”, objavljena u časopisu JGR Solid Earth.

Iako se još 1950-ih prestalo s bušenjem podzemnih voda, baš kako bi se spriječilo ili usporilo potonuće grada, višedesetljetni podaci i GPS snimke pokazuju da Mexico City nastavlja tonuti istom brzinom.

- Čak i kad bi se povisila razina podzemnih voda, nema nade za oporavak velike većine izgubljenog područja- pišu autori studije.

Sto godina propadanja

 

Mexico City smjestio se na južnom kraju 60 km duge i 100 km široke Meksičke doline, nekoć ispunjene nizom jezera, koja su španjolski osvajači - želeći povećati površinu za naseljavanje i smanjiti opasnost od poplava nakon ljetnih kiša - mahom isušili. No tlo u gradu još uvijek je mekano.

U takvim uvjetima, a uslijed kontinuirane težine divovskog grada i neprestanog gubitka podzemnih voda, neizbježno dolazi do daljnjeg spuštanja tla. Tonu čak i oni dijelovi grada koje još nisu toliko urbanizirani.

- Ako na takvu vrstu tla postavite teške zgrade i koristite plitke temelje, dolazi do zbijanja tla. To i gubitak podzemnih voda čine da je Ciudad de Mexico u ovakvoj situaciji- još je 2004. u razgovoru za britanski Guardian upozorio inženjer geotehnike Eddie Bromhead sa Sveučilišta Kingston.

Da grad tone, znanstvenici su prvi put uočili još početkom 20. stoljeća, kada je tonuo brzinom od osam centimetara godišnje. Do 1958. već je propadao 29 centimetara godišnje, pa su gradske vlasti tada odlučile ograničiti količinu vode koja se uzima iz bunara u središtu grada.

Činilo se da taj potez daje efekta - stopa spuštanja tla nakon toga se vratila na ispod devet centimetara godišnje. Međutim, novije snimke veće rezolucije ukazuju da od 2000. godine povijesni centar grada tone postojanom brzinom od 40 centimetara godišnje.

1,1 milijun kuća bez vode

 

Stručnjaci drže da bi se slojevi gline ispod grada mogli zbiti za 30 posto, te da - premda se to neće dogoditi još nekih 150 godina - ne možemo gotovo ništa učiniti da zaustavimo taj proces. Već danas je gornji sloj gline zbijen za 17 posto, a autori studije kažu da su te promjene „skoro u potpunosti nepovratne”.

Pritom ne tonu svi dijelovi grada istom brzinom. Neka su područja već potonula ispod izvornog korita jezera, dok su druga ostala na višem terenu. To u konačnici dovodi do većeg rizika od intenzivnog pucanja površine, što može oštetiti infrastrukturu grada i prouzročiti onečišćenje zaliha pitke vode.

Drugim riječima, ističu znanstvenici, ova situacija ne ugrožava samo infrastrukturu grada, nego i opskrbu vode za više milijuna ljudi.

Naime, zbog kiša i izvorskih voda koje teku s planina kojima je Mexico City okružen, grad je posebno sklon poplavama. A budući da glina ispod njega i dalje tone i puca, postoji mogućnost da ti snažni protoci prodru u podzemne zalihe vode, donoseći pritom otpad ili kanalizaciju.

Trenutno 70 posto gradske pitke vode dolazi iz izvora podzemnih voda. Ukoliko se ti izvori zagade, može doći do nedostatka pitke vode.

To je i inače veliki komunalni problem ovog megapolisa: već sada oko 1,1 milijun kuća na širem gradskom području nema pristup pitkoj vodi. Uz to, većina pukotina i lomova tla događa se baš u gradskim zonama u kojima obitava populacija nižeg socioekonomskog statusa.

- Bogatiji stanovnici grada mogu sebi priuštiti preseljenje na manje ugrožena područja ili nabavu pitke vode s drugih mjesta. No ako se ubrzo nešto ne poduzme, ostatak će biti prisiljen potonuti skupa s tlom - upozoravaju autori studije.

Osim potonuća grada i problema s pitkom vodom, Mexico City ima i još jedan ogroman komunalni problem – smog. Pošto je grad s tri strane okružen planinama – uključujući i vulkane Popocatépetl i Iztaccihuatl – opasnost od smoga je neprekidno vrlo velika, pa gradske vlasti stoga nerijetko naređuju zatvaranje škola.

Crni se dani i godine, vidimo, spremaju Mexico Cityju. Paradoks je da se šire područje ove metropole smatra najbrže rastućim područjem na čitavoj Zemlji, kako zbog silnog doseljavanja, tako i zbog visoke stope prirodnog prirasta stanovništva. Mnogi tu dolaze, a ne znaju da će morati otići.

Prema podacima iz 2020. godine, sam grad Mexico City ima 9,2 milijuna stanovnika, a prema popisu iz 2005. ukupna gradska aglomeracija broji preko 22 milijuna ljudi (danas je to vjerojatno već i preko 25 milijuna), što ju čini najvećim urbanim područjem u obje Amerike i trećim u svijetu, nakon Tokija i Seula.

Očito je, iz tempa doseljavanja, da u Meksiku vrijedi izreka „Svi putevi vode u Mexico City”. Nažalost, sva je prilika da će se uskoro govoriti obrnuto: „Svi putevi vode iz Mexico Cityja.”

Kad potone brod s tisuću putnika, to je takva tragedija i katastrofa da se o njoj i stoljeće kasnije snimaju filmovi. Ali kad potone čitav jedan grad, na čijem širem prostoru živi preko 20 milijuna ljudi, onda je teško uopće pronaći prave riječi.

A upravo se takva sudbina sprema Mexico Cityju, najvećem gradu zapadne hemisfere (uz São Paulo), kojeg njegovi žitelji zovu Ciudad de México. Prema najnovijem istraživanju grupe meksičkih i američkih znanstvenika, ovaj golemi grad već je toliko potonuo da ga je više nemoguće spasiti.

Kako se stoljećima neprestano odvodila voda iz podzemnih slojeva, korito jezera na kojem se grad smjestio postajalo je sve suvlje, te su glinene ploče korita počele pucati nezaustavljivom brzinom – stoji u studiji koja je nedavno, pod naslovom „Tijekom stoljeća potonuća u Mexico Cityju: Nema nade za značajno dizanje i sanaciju skladišnog kapaciteta”, objavljena u časopisu JGR Solid Earth.

Iako se još 1950-ih prestalo s bušenjem podzemnih voda, baš kako bi se spriječilo ili usporilo potonuće grada, višedesetljetni podaci i GPS snimke pokazuju da Mexico City nastavlja tonuti istom brzinom.

- Čak i kad bi se povisila razina podzemnih voda, nema nade za oporavak velike većine izgubljenog područja- pišu autori studije.

Sto godina propadanja

 

Mexico City smjestio se na južnom kraju 60 km duge i 100 km široke Meksičke doline, nekoć ispunjene nizom jezera, koja su španjolski osvajači - želeći povećati površinu za naseljavanje i smanjiti opasnost od poplava nakon ljetnih kiša - mahom isušili. No tlo u gradu još uvijek je mekano.

U takvim uvjetima, a uslijed kontinuirane težine divovskog grada i neprestanog gubitka podzemnih voda, neizbježno dolazi do daljnjeg spuštanja tla. Tonu čak i oni dijelovi grada koje još nisu toliko urbanizirani.

- Ako na takvu vrstu tla postavite teške zgrade i koristite plitke temelje, dolazi do zbijanja tla. To i gubitak podzemnih voda čine da je Ciudad de Mexico u ovakvoj situaciji- još je 2004. u razgovoru za britanski Guardian upozorio inženjer geotehnike Eddie Bromhead sa Sveučilišta Kingston.

Da grad tone, znanstvenici su prvi put uočili još početkom 20. stoljeća, kada je tonuo brzinom od osam centimetara godišnje. Do 1958. već je propadao 29 centimetara godišnje, pa su gradske vlasti tada odlučile ograničiti količinu vode koja se uzima iz bunara u središtu grada.

Činilo se da taj potez daje efekta - stopa spuštanja tla nakon toga se vratila na ispod devet centimetara godišnje. Međutim, novije snimke veće rezolucije ukazuju da od 2000. godine povijesni centar grada tone postojanom brzinom od 40 centimetara godišnje.

1,1 milijun kuća bez vode

 

Stručnjaci drže da bi se slojevi gline ispod grada mogli zbiti za 30 posto, te da - premda se to neće dogoditi još nekih 150 godina - ne možemo gotovo ništa učiniti da zaustavimo taj proces. Već danas je gornji sloj gline zbijen za 17 posto, a autori studije kažu da su te promjene „skoro u potpunosti nepovratne”.

Pritom ne tonu svi dijelovi grada istom brzinom. Neka su područja već potonula ispod izvornog korita jezera, dok su druga ostala na višem terenu. To u konačnici dovodi do većeg rizika od intenzivnog pucanja površine, što može oštetiti infrastrukturu grada i prouzročiti onečišćenje zaliha pitke vode.

Drugim riječima, ističu znanstvenici, ova situacija ne ugrožava samo infrastrukturu grada, nego i opskrbu vode za više milijuna ljudi.

Naime, zbog kiša i izvorskih voda koje teku s planina kojima je Mexico City okružen, grad je posebno sklon poplavama. A budući da glina ispod njega i dalje tone i puca, postoji mogućnost da ti snažni protoci prodru u podzemne zalihe vode, donoseći pritom otpad ili kanalizaciju.

Trenutno 70 posto gradske pitke vode dolazi iz izvora podzemnih voda. Ukoliko se ti izvori zagade, može doći do nedostatka pitke vode.

To je i inače veliki komunalni problem ovog megapolisa: već sada oko 1,1 milijun kuća na širem gradskom području nema pristup pitkoj vodi. Uz to, većina pukotina i lomova tla događa se baš u gradskim zonama u kojima obitava populacija nižeg socioekonomskog statusa.

- Bogatiji stanovnici grada mogu sebi priuštiti preseljenje na manje ugrožena područja ili nabavu pitke vode s drugih mjesta. No ako se ubrzo nešto ne poduzme, ostatak će biti prisiljen potonuti skupa s tlom - upozoravaju autori studije.

Osim potonuća grada i problema s pitkom vodom, Mexico City ima i još jedan ogroman komunalni problem – smog. Pošto je grad s tri strane okružen planinama – uključujući i vulkane Popocatépetl i Iztaccihuatl – opasnost od smoga je neprekidno vrlo velika, pa gradske vlasti stoga nerijetko naređuju zatvaranje škola.

Crni se dani i godine, vidimo, spremaju Mexico Cityju. Paradoks je da se šire područje ove metropole smatra najbrže rastućim područjem na čitavoj Zemlji, kako zbog silnog doseljavanja, tako i zbog visoke stope prirodnog prirasta stanovništva. Mnogi tu dolaze, a ne znaju da će morati otići.

Prema podacima iz 2020. godine, sam grad Mexico City ima 9,2 milijuna stanovnika, a prema popisu iz 2005. ukupna gradska aglomeracija broji preko 22 milijuna ljudi (danas je to vjerojatno već i preko 25 milijuna), što ju čini najvećim urbanim područjem u obje Amerike i trećim u svijetu, nakon Tokija i Seula.

Očito je, iz tempa doseljavanja, da u Meksiku vrijedi izreka „Svi putevi vode u Mexico City”. Nažalost, sva je prilika da će se uskoro govoriti obrnuto: „Svi putevi vode iz Mexico Cityja.”
