Američka savezna država Virginija u srijedu je ukinula smrtnu kaznu, što je simbolična odluka za tu državu koja ima rekordan broj pogubljenja u američkoj povijesti, a ovom je odlukom postala prva bivša država segregacijskog juga koja je okončala primjenu smrtne kazne.

"Danas više nema mjesta smrtnoj kazni u ovoj državi", rekao je demokratski guverner Ralph Northam na svečanosti u zatvoru Greensville, gdje su se do sada odvijala pogubljenja.

Ukidanje smrtne kazne je "dobra i moralna odluka", rekao je.

Spomenuo je slučaj Earla Washingtona, hendikepiranog muškarca koji je 1984. osuđen na smrt, čije je pogubljenje ukinuto samo devet dana prije predviđenog datuma. Oslobođen je 2000. godine.

"Sustav je omogućio da nedužna osoba bude osuđena za ubojstvo i ako je Earl Washington jedina osoba za koju znamo da je spašena iz hodnika smrti u Virginiji, možemo li biti sigurni da nije bilo i drugih?"

"Ne možete izreći ovu presudu ako niste 100 posto sigurni da ste u pravu, i ne možete ju izreći ako znate da sustav ne funkcionira jednako za sve", objasnio je i naglasio da su 296 od 377 pogubljenih zatvorenika u XX. stoljeću bili Afroamerikanci.

Nakon dugih i teških rasprava dva doma te države su početkom godine izglasala ukidanje smrtne kazne i tako se Virginija pridružila 22 američke države gdje je smrtna kazna već ukinuta i tri druge u kojima traje moratorij (Kalifornija, Oregon i Pennsylvanija).

Američka savezna država Virginija u srijedu je ukinula smrtnu kaznu, što je simbolična odluka za tu državu koja ima rekordan broj pogubljenja u američkoj povijesti, a ovom je odlukom postala prva bivša država segregacijskog juga koja je okončala primjenu smrtne kazne.

"Danas više nema mjesta smrtnoj kazni u ovoj državi", rekao je demokratski guverner Ralph Northam na svečanosti u zatvoru Greensville, gdje su se do sada odvijala pogubljenja.

Ukidanje smrtne kazne je "dobra i moralna odluka", rekao je.

Spomenuo je slučaj Earla Washingtona, hendikepiranog muškarca koji je 1984. osuđen na smrt, čije je pogubljenje ukinuto samo devet dana prije predviđenog datuma. Oslobođen je 2000. godine.

"Sustav je omogućio da nedužna osoba bude osuđena za ubojstvo i ako je Earl Washington jedina osoba za koju znamo da je spašena iz hodnika smrti u Virginiji, možemo li biti sigurni da nije bilo i drugih?"

"Ne možete izreći ovu presudu ako niste 100 posto sigurni da ste u pravu, i ne možete ju izreći ako znate da sustav ne funkcionira jednako za sve", objasnio je i naglasio da su 296 od 377 pogubljenih zatvorenika u XX. stoljeću bili Afroamerikanci.

Nakon dugih i teških rasprava dva doma te države su početkom godine izglasala ukidanje smrtne kazne i tako se Virginija pridružila 22 američke države gdje je smrtna kazna već ukinuta i tri druge u kojima traje moratorij (Kalifornija, Oregon i Pennsylvanija).

Američka savezna država Virginija u srijedu je ukinula smrtnu kaznu, što je simbolična odluka za tu državu koja ima rekordan broj pogubljenja u američkoj povijesti, a ovom je odlukom postala prva bivša država segregacijskog juga koja je okončala primjenu smrtne kazne.

"Danas više nema mjesta smrtnoj kazni u ovoj državi", rekao je demokratski guverner Ralph Northam na svečanosti u zatvoru Greensville, gdje su se do sada odvijala pogubljenja.

Ukidanje smrtne kazne je "dobra i moralna odluka", rekao je.

Spomenuo je slučaj Earla Washingtona, hendikepiranog muškarca koji je 1984. osuđen na smrt, čije je pogubljenje ukinuto samo devet dana prije predviđenog datuma. Oslobođen je 2000. godine.
