Pele se u listopadu 1974. godine oprostio od profesionalnog nogometa, ali je ubrzo stigla ponuda koju jednostavno nije mogao odbiti. Njegova je karijera do tada trajala 18 godina, a u tom je vremenu odigrao 1253 utakmice i postigao 1216 pogodaka. Između 1958. i 1970. godine vodio je Brazil do tri naslova prvaka svijeta, pišu Sportske novosti.

New York Times je 4. lipnja 1975. godine objavio izvještaj o Peleovom potpisu ugovora s New York Cosmosom, koji ga je učinio u tom trenutku najplaćenijim sportašem svijeta u kolektivnim sportovima.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento za trogodišnji je ugovor dobio sedam milijuna dolara, od čega je morao platiti dva milijuna dolara poreza. Naravno, novac je tada imao drugačiju vrijednost nego danas. Tih sedam milijuna dolara u današnje bi vrijeme vrijedilo čak 38,8 milijuna dolara!

Kako je vlasnik Cosmosa bila kompanija Warner Communications, odmah je bilo dogovoreno i korištenje Peleovog imena u svrhu oglašavanja i odnosa s javnošću.

Amerikanci su dugo nagovarali Pelea na dolazak, a telegramom mu se uoči potpisa ugovora obratio čak i tadašnji državni tajnik Henry Kissinger:

‘‘Odlučite li potpisati ugovor, siguran sam da će vaš boravak u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama znatno doprinijeti bližim vezama između Brazila i SAD-a na području sporta‘‘.

Podršku Peleovom prijelazu u SAD pružio je i Antonio Azeredo da Silveira, ministar vanjskih poslova Brazila.

Tadašnji predsjednik NY Cosmosa Clive Toye Pelea je na dolazak u New York nagovarao još od 1971. godine, a na putu je proveo 75.000 milja. Upornost mu se na kraju isplatila.

U početku se veliki Brazilac bojao reakcije svojih sunarodnjaka s obzirom na to da je odbio igrati na Svjetskom prvenstvu godinu dana ranije. No, kasnije se ipak predomislio, pisao je New York Times.

- Nije to bila izdaja. Imao sam dobre razloge što nisam igrao na tom Mundijalu. Mislim da će moji sunarodnjaci biti ponosni što pomažem nogometu u najvećoj zemlji na svijetu. Moj ugovor nije samo igranje za Cosmos, već promocija nogometa u Americi – govorio je tada Pele.

Takvom njegovom odlukom bili su sretni mnogi Brazilci, no ne baš svi. Jedan od njih, zastupnik u parlamentu Rio Grandea, predložio je da se Peleu oduzme titula počasnog građanina ‘jer je razočarao milijune Brazilaca‘. To se, naravno, nije dogodilo...

Pele se u listopadu 1974. godine oprostio od profesionalnog nogometa, ali je ubrzo stigla ponuda koju jednostavno nije mogao odbiti. Njegova je karijera do tada trajala 18 godina, a u tom je vremenu odigrao 1253 utakmice i postigao 1216 pogodaka. Između 1958. i 1970. godine vodio je Brazil do tri naslova prvaka svijeta, pišu Sportske novosti.

New York Times je 4. lipnja 1975. godine objavio izvještaj o Peleovom potpisu ugovora s New York Cosmosom, koji ga je učinio u tom trenutku najplaćenijim sportašem svijeta u kolektivnim sportovima.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento za trogodišnji je ugovor dobio sedam milijuna dolara, od čega je morao platiti dva milijuna dolara poreza. Naravno, novac je tada imao drugačiju vrijednost nego danas. Tih sedam milijuna dolara u današnje bi vrijeme vrijedilo čak 38,8 milijuna dolara!

Kako je vlasnik Cosmosa bila kompanija Warner Communications, odmah je bilo dogovoreno i korištenje Peleovog imena u svrhu oglašavanja i odnosa s javnošću.

Amerikanci su dugo nagovarali Pelea na dolazak, a telegramom mu se uoči potpisa ugovora obratio čak i tadašnji državni tajnik Henry Kissinger:

‘‘Odlučite li potpisati ugovor, siguran sam da će vaš boravak u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama znatno doprinijeti bližim vezama između Brazila i SAD-a na području sporta‘‘.

Podršku Peleovom prijelazu u SAD pružio je i Antonio Azeredo da Silveira, ministar vanjskih poslova Brazila.

Tadašnji predsjednik NY Cosmosa Clive Toye Pelea je na dolazak u New York nagovarao još od 1971. godine, a na putu je proveo 75.000 milja. Upornost mu se na kraju isplatila.

U početku se veliki Brazilac bojao reakcije svojih sunarodnjaka s obzirom na to da je odbio igrati na Svjetskom prvenstvu godinu dana ranije. No, kasnije se ipak predomislio, pisao je New York Times.

- Nije to bila izdaja. Imao sam dobre razloge što nisam igrao na tom Mundijalu. Mislim da će moji sunarodnjaci biti ponosni što pomažem nogometu u najvećoj zemlji na svijetu. Moj ugovor nije samo igranje za Cosmos, već promocija nogometa u Americi – govorio je tada Pele.

Pele se u listopadu 1974. godine oprostio od profesionalnog nogometa, ali je ubrzo stigla ponuda koju jednostavno nije mogao odbiti. Njegova je karijera do tada trajala 18 godina, a u tom je vremenu odigrao 1253 utakmice i postigao 1216 pogodaka. Između 1958. i 1970. godine vodio je Brazil do tri naslova prvaka svijeta, pišu Sportske novosti.

New York Times je 4. lipnja 1975. godine objavio izvještaj o Peleovom potpisu ugovora s New York Cosmosom, koji ga je učinio u tom trenutku najplaćenijim sportašem svijeta u kolektivnim sportovima.
