Izborio se s brojnim neprijateljima i životnim nedaćama, ali u dobi od sto godina nije uspio pobijediti COVID-19.
Stogodišnji britanski kapetan Tom Moore, veteran Drugog svjetskog rata koji je prošle godine ponovno postao nacionalni junak humanitarnim pothvatom zahvaljujući kojemu je prikupljeno više od 32 milijuna funta za zdravstvene djelatnike, preminuo je u utorak poslijepodne u bolnici u koju je primljen u nedjelju zbog upale pluća i prošlotjednog pozitivnog testa na koronavirus.

Kraljica Elizabetha II., koja ga je u srpnju prošle godine proglasila vitezom i dodijelila mu je počasni čin pukovnika, bila je među prvima koji su se oprostili od inspirativnog sir Toma koji je preminuo mirno okružen članovima svoje obitelji.
U priopćenju iz Buckinghamske palače kaže se kako je vladarica poslala privatnu poruku sućuti obitelji kapetana Toma. Kraljica je, kaže se, uživala u susretu s kapetanom Tomom i njegovom obitelji prošlog ljeta u Windsoru.

Britanski premijer Boris Johnson u svojoj objavi je kazao kako je kapetan Tom bio junak u punom smislu te riječi. U mračnim danima Drugog svjetskog rata borio se za slobodu, a u najdubljoj poslijeratnoj krizi ujedinio je naciju, ohrabrio je utjelovljujući trijumf ljudskog duha, napisao je Johnson.
Prošlog proljeća, tijekom prvog britanskog „lockdowna”, kapetan Tom je odlučio uz pomoć hodalice koju je koristio nakon što je operirao kuk, napraviti sto krugova svojim dvorištem prije stotog rođendana 30. travnja kako bi prikupio tisuću funta za “hrabre medicinske sestre i liječnike” na prvoj crti borbe protiv koronavirusa.

Preko noći se njegov skromni plan pretvorio u humanitarni pokret s donacijama iz cijele Britanije i zemalja širom svijeta. Premda je plan od sto 'đireva' dvorištem ostvario puno prije rođendana, nastavio je hodati, a novac je nastavio pritjecati. Kad je stoti put prohodao svojim vrtom u selu Marston Moretaine u Bedfordshireu, u njemu je bila postrojena počasna straža prvog bataljuna Yorkširske regimente za čovjeka koji je milijunima postao inspiracija.
Zahvaljujući tom pothvatu, kapetan Tom postao je i najstarija osoba na naslovnici magazina GQ. Dospio je i na prvo mjesto glazbenih ljestvica snimivši s Michaelom Ballom himnu Liverpoolovih navijača „You'll Never Walk Alone”, a objavio je i autobiografiju "Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day".

U objavi o njegovoj smrti, obitelj kapetana Toma navela je da je posljednja godina njegovog života bila izvanredna, da se pomladio i iskusio stvari o kojima je mogao samo sanjati.

Kraljica Elizabetha II., koja ga je u srpnju prošle godine proglasila vitezom i dodijelila mu je počasni čin pukovnika, bila je među prvima koji su se oprostili od inspirativnog sir Toma koji je preminuo mirno okružen članovima svoje obitelji.
U priopćenju iz Buckinghamske palače kaže se kako je vladarica poslala privatnu poruku sućuti obitelji kapetana Toma. Kraljica je, kaže se, uživala u susretu s kapetanom Tomom i njegovom obitelji prošlog ljeta u Windsoru.

Britanski premijer Boris Johnson u svojoj objavi je kazao kako je kapetan Tom bio junak u punom smislu te riječi. U mračnim danima Drugog svjetskog rata borio se za slobodu, a u najdubljoj poslijeratnoj krizi ujedinio je naciju, ohrabrio je utjelovljujući trijumf ljudskog duha, napisao je Johnson.
Prošlog proljeća, tijekom prvog britanskog „lockdowna”, kapetan Tom je odlučio uz pomoć hodalice koju je koristio nakon što je operirao kuk, napraviti sto krugova svojim dvorištem prije stotog rođendana 30. travnja kako bi prikupio tisuću funta za “hrabre medicinske sestre i liječnike” na prvoj crti borbe protiv koronavirusa.

Preko noći se njegov skromni plan pretvorio u humanitarni pokret s donacijama iz cijele Britanije i zemalja širom svijeta. Premda je plan od sto 'đireva' dvorištem ostvario puno prije rođendana, nastavio je hodati, a novac je nastavio pritjecati. Kad je stoti put prohodao svojim vrtom u selu Marston Moretaine u Bedfordshireu, u njemu je bila postrojena počasna straža prvog bataljuna Yorkširske regimente za čovjeka koji je milijunima postao inspiracija.
Zahvaljujući tom pothvatu, kapetan Tom postao je i najstarija osoba na naslovnici magazina GQ. Dospio je i na prvo mjesto glazbenih ljestvica snimivši s Michaelom Ballom himnu Liverpoolovih navijača „You'll Never Walk Alone”, a objavio je i autobiografiju "Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day".
