Nakon što je Donald Trump uslijed smrti Ruth Bader Ginsburg za novu sutkinju vrhovnog suda nominirao Amy Coney Barrett digla se velika prašina oko njenih radikalnih religioznih svjetonazora. Ona je i članica katoličkog društva koje se zalaže za promicanje takvih vrijednosti koje je mnoge podsjetilo, osim po stavovima, i po nazivima koje koriste na roman Sluškinjina priča. Mediji su tako počeli pisati da je autorica knjige Margaret Atwood inspiraciju pronašla u njegovim redovima.

'People of praise' (Ljudi hvale) mala je karizmatska katolička grupa nastala 1971. godine.  Njeni članovi se zalažu za ideju da je muškarac glava kuće koja ima autoritet nad svojom suprugom i podrazumijeva da život počinje začećem čime se protive pobačaju. Danas broje oko 1700 članova čime ne bi imali osobit utjecaj da jedna od njih nije i Coney Barrett koja otvoreno priznaje da je njeno vjersko opredjeljenje usmjerava i u političkom djelovanju. O tome se govorilo još 2017. kada joj je senatorica Dianne Feinstein tijekom saslušanja poručila da “dogma živi glasno u njoj”, izjavu koju su njeni pristaše iskoristili kao primjer diskriminacije katolika i slogan u njenom daljnjem političkom napredovanju.

U distopijskom romanu Margaret Atwood ona govori o društvu koje je u potpunosti odbacilo sekularnu državu, uvelo vjerske zakone i naposljetku svelo malobrojne žene koje su još uvijek plodne na roblje koje služi za reprodukciju i naziva ih se sluškinjama (handmade). Kada je roman tek izašao ona je otkrila da joj je poticaj za pisanje bila postojeća katolička grupa, a čitav niz podudarnosti između naziva i ponašanja u romanu i u grupi 'People of praise' navele su mnoge novine na zaključak kako je riječ upravo o toj.

Prva je sličnost što su 'Ljudi hvale' nekoć imali vjerski čin zvan "sluškinja". Svi pripadnici grupe odgovorni su osobnom savjetniku. Ti savjetnici nude smjernice o glavnim životnim odlukama, uključujući, s kim se treba vjenčati, gdje živjeti, hoće li se zaposliti ili kupiti dom i kako odgajati djecu. Muški savjetnici nekoć su se nazivali 'glavama' dok su žene nazivane 'sluškinjama', a naknadno je titula preimenovana u 'vođu'.

Druga slučajnost je što je Margaret Atwood grupu koja je inspirirala opisala kao „katoličku karizmatičnu sektu, koja žene naziva sluškinjama“. Atwood u to vrijeme nije imenovala sektu, pa kad je njezin citat ponovno isplivao nekim je čitateljima bilo vrlo lako pomisliti kako su 'ljudi hvale' katolička karizmatična sekta koja žene naziva sluškinjama i to je to. U skladu s tim napisano je više tekstova koji su na osnovi vlastitih pretpostavki bez prethodne provjere objavili netočne podatke.

Kada su autoricu romana pitali da potvrdi ili demantira ove navode ona nije mogla s potpunom sigurnošću otkriti koja je grupa koja ju je inspirirala jer su čitava njena istraživanja za knjigu na sveučilištu u Torontu kojem trenutno nema pristup zbog korone, ali čuva arhivu novinskih intervjua i u njima je navodila drugu, vrlo sličnu skupinu 'Ljudi nade'. Ta zajednica također u potpunosti odgovara priči, karizmatska su fundamentalistička skupina koja je koristila titulu sluškinje, a oni su k tome, navodno i dogovarali brakove među teenagerima. 

Bez obzira na to što se ispostavilo da ovo nije ta konkretna grupa koja je poslužila kao inspiracija za Sluškinjinu priču vidi se kolika je snaga simbolike koju je roman unio u društvo. I u Zagrebu su žene tijekom prosvjeda za ženska prava 2018. bile obučene u uniforme sluškinji, a u SAD-u je ta odjeća postala sinonim za opresiju nad ženama posebno što se tiče reproduktivnih prava.

S druge strane katolici strahuju da se time plaši mase od pripadnika njihove religije, da ih se marginalizira i da je riječ o opasnoj anti vjerskoj kampanji na koju se obraća premalo pozornost.

Nakon što je Donald Trump uslijed smrti Ruth Bader Ginsburg za novu sutkinju vrhovnog suda nominirao Amy Coney Barrett digla se velika prašina oko njenih radikalnih religioznih svjetonazora. Ona je i članica katoličkog društva koje se zalaže za promicanje takvih vrijednosti koje je mnoge podsjetilo, osim po stavovima, i po nazivima koje koriste na roman Sluškinjina priča. Mediji su tako počeli pisati da je autorica knjige Margaret Atwood inspiraciju pronašla u njegovim redovima.

'People of praise' (Ljudi hvale) mala je karizmatska katolička grupa nastala 1971. godine.  Njeni članovi se zalažu za ideju da je muškarac glava kuće koja ima autoritet nad svojom suprugom i podrazumijeva da život počinje začećem čime se protive pobačaju. Danas broje oko 1700 članova čime ne bi imali osobit utjecaj da jedna od njih nije i Coney Barrett koja otvoreno priznaje da je njeno vjersko opredjeljenje usmjerava i u političkom djelovanju. O tome se govorilo još 2017. kada joj je senatorica Dianne Feinstein tijekom saslušanja poručila da “dogma živi glasno u njoj”, izjavu koju su njeni pristaše iskoristili kao primjer diskriminacije katolika i slogan u njenom daljnjem političkom napredovanju.

U distopijskom romanu Margaret Atwood ona govori o društvu koje je u potpunosti odbacilo sekularnu državu, uvelo vjerske zakone i naposljetku svelo malobrojne žene koje su još uvijek plodne na roblje koje služi za reprodukciju i naziva ih se sluškinjama (handmade). Kada je roman tek izašao ona je otkrila da joj je poticaj za pisanje bila postojeća katolička grupa, a čitav niz podudarnosti između naziva i ponašanja u romanu i u grupi 'People of praise' navele su mnoge novine na zaključak kako je riječ upravo o toj.

Prva je sličnost što su 'Ljudi hvale' nekoć imali vjerski čin zvan "sluškinja". Svi pripadnici grupe odgovorni su osobnom savjetniku. Ti savjetnici nude smjernice o glavnim životnim odlukama, uključujući, s kim se treba vjenčati, gdje živjeti, hoće li se zaposliti ili kupiti dom i kako odgajati djecu. Muški savjetnici nekoć su se nazivali 'glavama' dok su žene nazivane 'sluškinjama', a naknadno je titula preimenovana u 'vođu'.

Druga slučajnost je što je Margaret Atwood grupu koja je inspirirala opisala kao „katoličku karizmatičnu sektu, koja žene naziva sluškinjama“. Atwood u to vrijeme nije imenovala sektu, pa kad je njezin citat ponovno isplivao nekim je čitateljima bilo vrlo lako pomisliti kako su 'ljudi hvale' katolička karizmatična sekta koja žene naziva sluškinjama i to je to. U skladu s tim napisano je više tekstova koji su na osnovi vlastitih pretpostavki bez prethodne provjere objavili netočne podatke.

Kada su autoricu romana pitali da potvrdi ili demantira ove navode ona nije mogla s potpunom sigurnošću otkriti koja je grupa koja ju je inspirirala jer su čitava njena istraživanja za knjigu na sveučilištu u Torontu kojem trenutno nema pristup zbog korone, ali čuva arhivu novinskih intervjua i u njima je navodila drugu, vrlo sličnu skupinu 'Ljudi nade'. Ta zajednica također u potpunosti odgovara priči, karizmatska su fundamentalistička skupina koja je koristila titulu sluškinje, a oni su k tome, navodno i dogovarali brakove među teenagerima. 

Bez obzira na to što se ispostavilo da ovo nije ta konkretna grupa koja je poslužila kao inspiracija za Sluškinjinu priču vidi se kolika je snaga simbolike koju je roman unio u društvo. I u Zagrebu su žene tijekom prosvjeda za ženska prava 2018. bile obučene u uniforme sluškinji, a u SAD-u je ta odjeća postala sinonim za opresiju nad ženama posebno što se tiče reproduktivnih prava.

S druge strane katolici strahuju da se time plaši mase od pripadnika njihove religije, da ih se marginalizira i da je riječ o opasnoj anti vjerskoj kampanji na koju se obraća premalo pozornost.
