U posljednjih desetak godina primijećen je značajan porast u broju djece koje su u organizam unijele melatonin, hormon koji "smiruje" sve funkcije u organizmu te signalizira da je vrijeme za spavanje, i otrovala se – namjerno ili slučajno. Riječ je o 260,435 slučajeva, uglavnom petogodišnjaka ili još mlađe djece, koja su se otrovala melatoninom, a radi se o porastu od 530 posto od 2012. do 2021. godine, stoji u izvješću Američke udruge za kontrolu trovana, a prenosi N1.

Melatonin, koji inače proizvodi epifiza, koristi se za uspavljivanje i poboljšanje kvalitete sna djece i odraslih, a može se pronaći u kapsulama, tekućem obliku ili u obliku gumenih bombona.​

Melatonin, osim utjecaja na san, ima i antioksidativno djelovanje pa je vrlo tražena anti-aging supstanca. 

U zadnje četiri godine, njegova prodaja porasla je za 150 posto. 

Iako se kod djece obično nisu javljali ozbiljniji simptomi i stvar se mogla riješiti kućnom njegom, oko 1.6 posto djece imalo je veće komplikacije - bio je potreban respirator, a dvoje je i umrlo. 

Melatonin je za djecu siguran u malim dozama, od 1-3 miligrama, a u slučaju potrebe za većom dozom treba se konzultirati s liječnikom i pomno pratiti stanje djeteta. Na tržištu postoje i suplementi koji sadrže puno više melatonina nego što je naznačeno na etiketi. Neki proizvodi sadrže i serotonin, što povećava toksičnost za djecu.

Stručnjaci za javno zdravstvo i pedijatri posebno su zabrinuti radi melatonina koji dolazi u obliku gumenih bombona koji su privlačni djeci. Isto tako, mnogi roditelji vjeruju da melatonin opasan pa djetetu mogu dati veće količine od dozvoljenih.

Melatonin bi se trebao tretirati kao svaki drugi lijek u kući, ističu liječnici, pa i kapsule melatonina treba držati izvan dohvata djece, piše N1.

Simptomi trovanja melatoninom​

Većina djece neće pokazivati simptome, ali mogu se javiti gastroenterološki i kardiovaskularni problemi. Pedijatar Daniel Ganjian rekao je da većina djece navodi jaku pospanost, a neka i povraćaju. Oko 3.555 djece iskusilo je ozbiljnije probleme, dvoje je umrlo, a petero ih je bilo na respiratoru.

U ozbiljnijim situacijama melatonin može usporiti disanje i rad pluća, a može doći i do promjena u metabolizmu. Svakako je potrebno javiti se liječniku.

Ne postoji lijek za trovanje melatoninom, ali tretman može uključivati respirator, infuziju, ispumpavanje želuca i slično, navodi N1.

U posljednjih desetak godina primijećen je značajan porast u broju djece koje su u organizam unijele melatonin, hormon koji "smiruje" sve funkcije u organizmu te signalizira da je vrijeme za spavanje, i otrovala se – namjerno ili slučajno. Riječ je o 260,435 slučajeva, uglavnom petogodišnjaka ili još mlađe djece, koja su se otrovala melatoninom, a radi se o porastu od 530 posto od 2012. do 2021. godine, stoji u izvješću Američke udruge za kontrolu trovana, a prenosi N1.

Melatonin, koji inače proizvodi epifiza, koristi se za uspavljivanje i poboljšanje kvalitete sna djece i odraslih, a može se pronaći u kapsulama, tekućem obliku ili u obliku gumenih bombona.​

Melatonin, osim utjecaja na san, ima i antioksidativno djelovanje pa je vrlo tražena anti-aging supstanca. 

U zadnje četiri godine, njegova prodaja porasla je za 150 posto. 

Iako se kod djece obično nisu javljali ozbiljniji simptomi i stvar se mogla riješiti kućnom njegom, oko 1.6 posto djece imalo je veće komplikacije - bio je potreban respirator, a dvoje je i umrlo. 

Melatonin je za djecu siguran u malim dozama, od 1-3 miligrama, a u slučaju potrebe za većom dozom treba se konzultirati s liječnikom i pomno pratiti stanje djeteta. Na tržištu postoje i suplementi koji sadrže puno više melatonina nego što je naznačeno na etiketi. Neki proizvodi sadrže i serotonin, što povećava toksičnost za djecu.

Stručnjaci za javno zdravstvo i pedijatri posebno su zabrinuti radi melatonina koji dolazi u obliku gumenih bombona koji su privlačni djeci. Isto tako, mnogi roditelji vjeruju da melatonin opasan pa djetetu mogu dati veće količine od dozvoljenih.

Melatonin bi se trebao tretirati kao svaki drugi lijek u kući, ističu liječnici, pa i kapsule melatonina treba držati izvan dohvata djece, piše N1.

Simptomi trovanja melatoninom​

Većina djece neće pokazivati simptome, ali mogu se javiti gastroenterološki i kardiovaskularni problemi. Pedijatar Daniel Ganjian rekao je da većina djece navodi jaku pospanost, a neka i povraćaju. Oko 3.555 djece iskusilo je ozbiljnije probleme, dvoje je umrlo, a petero ih je bilo na respiratoru.

U ozbiljnijim situacijama melatonin može usporiti disanje i rad pluća, a može doći i do promjena u metabolizmu. Svakako je potrebno javiti se liječniku.

Ne postoji lijek za trovanje melatoninom, ali tretman može uključivati respirator, infuziju, ispumpavanje želuca i slično, navodi N1.

U posljednjih desetak godina primijećen je značajan porast u broju djece koje su u organizam unijele melatonin, hormon koji "smiruje" sve funkcije u organizmu te signalizira da je vrijeme za spavanje, i otrovala se – namjerno ili slučajno. Riječ je o 260,435 slučajeva, uglavnom petogodišnjaka ili još mlađe djece, koja su se otrovala melatoninom, a radi se o porastu od 530 posto od 2012. do 2021. godine, stoji u izvješću Američke udruge za kontrolu trovana, a prenosi N1.

Melatonin, koji inače proizvodi epifiza, koristi se za uspavljivanje i poboljšanje kvalitete sna djece i odraslih, a može se pronaći u kapsulama, tekućem obliku ili u obliku gumenih bombona.​
