Općenito se vjeruje (a i znanost to dokazuje) da žene žive duže nego muškarci, ali postoje i novi pokazatelji koji kažu da visina utječe na životni vijek. Konkretno, niži ljudi žive duže od viših, piše Živim.

Dva stručnjaka za dugovječnost, JeanMarie Robine, demograf koji proučava odnos između zdravlja i dugovječnosti, i David Sinclair, suvoditelj Paul F. Glenn centra za biologiju istraživanja starenja na Harvard Medical School, iznijeli su svoje teorije kojima to objašnjavaju.

- Nekad se nije smatralo dobrim biti nizak, niski ljudi često su se slabije hranili tijekom prve godine života, nisu se mogli pravilno razvijati i boriti protiv zaraznih bolesti. Povijesno gledano, niži rast povezivali smo s lošim razvojem i visokom razinom smrtnosti. Ali to se drastično promijenilo - kaže Robine i dodaje:

- Trenutačno, ako su im dostupne blagodati bogatstva i obrazovanja, niži ljudi žive duže od viših. To je tijekom posljednjih trideset godina potvrdilo i nekoliko istraživanja koja su otkrila negativnu korelaciju između veće visine i dugovječnosti. Tako nalazi temeljeni na milijunima smrtnih slučajeva sugeriraju da niži i sitniji ljudi imaju nižu stopu smrtnosti i manje kroničnih bolesti povezanih s prehranom, posebno nakon srednje dobi.

Niži ljudi također imaju duži prosječan životni vijek. Istraživanje na oko 2500 finskih sportaša pokazalo je da su skijaši živjeli gotovo sedam godina duže od košarkaša, od kojih su bili niži za oko šest centimetara. Jedna talijanska studija pokazala je i da su vojnici koji su bili niži pet centimetara živjeli dvije godine duže od svojih viših vršnjaka.

- Biološki razlog vjerojatno je to što kada ste viši, tijelu je potrebno više replikacija stanica, a to ga brže iscrpljuje - kaže Robine.

Žene su otpornije

- Istraživanja pokazuju da je visina važna. Što je organizam manji, a to vrijedi i za ljude i za životinje, imat će duži životni vijek. No, čini se i da visina žena ima utjecaja nanjihovu dugovječnost. Neki izvori poput znanstvene online publikacije Our World in Data navode da su u prosjeku žene (globalno) 12 centimetara niže od muškaraca.

Velika razlika u visini između muškaraca i žena posljedica je razlika u razini hormona rasta koja je mnogo viša kod žena, a poznato je da razina hormona rasta utječe na dugovječnost - kaže Sinclair, suosnivač i znanstveni savjetnik biotehnološke tvrtke koja istražuje mogućnosti poboljšanja životnog vijeka i dugovječnosti. Ipak, visina možda nije jedini razlog zašto žene žive duže.

- Žene su otpornije na smrtnost od muškaraca jer se više opiru poteškoćama. Također se mogu osjećati odgovorne ne samo za vlastiti život nego i za život svoje djece. Zbog toga moraju biti jače i ostati vitalne duže od muškaraca - kaže Robine i naglašava da sve dok je muškarac zdrav i bez invaliditeta, njegova razina smrtnosti jednaka je kao i ona u žena.

- Muškarci slabije preživljavaju ako nisu vrlo dobrog zdravlja, dok su žene mnogo otpornije na narušeno zdravlje - kaže Robine i dodaje da je to fascinantno jer je dobro poznato da naše društvo ne tretira žene baš najbolje pa bismo zapravo očekivali suprotno.

Općenito se vjeruje (a i znanost to dokazuje) da žene žive duže nego muškarci, ali postoje i novi pokazatelji koji kažu da visina utječe na životni vijek. Konkretno, niži ljudi žive duže od viših, piše Živim.

Dva stručnjaka za dugovječnost, JeanMarie Robine, demograf koji proučava odnos između zdravlja i dugovječnosti, i David Sinclair, suvoditelj Paul F. Glenn centra za biologiju istraživanja starenja na Harvard Medical School, iznijeli su svoje teorije kojima to objašnjavaju.

- Nekad se nije smatralo dobrim biti nizak, niski ljudi često su se slabije hranili tijekom prve godine života, nisu se mogli pravilno razvijati i boriti protiv zaraznih bolesti. Povijesno gledano, niži rast povezivali smo s lošim razvojem i visokom razinom smrtnosti. Ali to se drastično promijenilo - kaže Robine i dodaje:

- Trenutačno, ako su im dostupne blagodati bogatstva i obrazovanja, niži ljudi žive duže od viših. To je tijekom posljednjih trideset godina potvrdilo i nekoliko istraživanja koja su otkrila negativnu korelaciju između veće visine i dugovječnosti. Tako nalazi temeljeni na milijunima smrtnih slučajeva sugeriraju da niži i sitniji ljudi imaju nižu stopu smrtnosti i manje kroničnih bolesti povezanih s prehranom, posebno nakon srednje dobi.

Niži ljudi također imaju duži prosječan životni vijek. Istraživanje na oko 2500 finskih sportaša pokazalo je da su skijaši živjeli gotovo sedam godina duže od košarkaša, od kojih su bili niži za oko šest centimetara. Jedna talijanska studija pokazala je i da su vojnici koji su bili niži pet centimetara živjeli dvije godine duže od svojih viših vršnjaka.

- Biološki razlog vjerojatno je to što kada ste viši, tijelu je potrebno više replikacija stanica, a to ga brže iscrpljuje - kaže Robine.

Žene su otpornije

- Istraživanja pokazuju da je visina važna. Što je organizam manji, a to vrijedi i za ljude i za životinje, imat će duži životni vijek. No, čini se i da visina žena ima utjecaja nanjihovu dugovječnost. Neki izvori poput znanstvene online publikacije Our World in Data navode da su u prosjeku žene (globalno) 12 centimetara niže od muškaraca.

Velika razlika u visini između muškaraca i žena posljedica je razlika u razini hormona rasta koja je mnogo viša kod žena, a poznato je da razina hormona rasta utječe na dugovječnost - kaže Sinclair, suosnivač i znanstveni savjetnik biotehnološke tvrtke koja istražuje mogućnosti poboljšanja životnog vijeka i dugovječnosti. Ipak, visina možda nije jedini razlog zašto žene žive duže.

- Žene su otpornije na smrtnost od muškaraca jer se više opiru poteškoćama. Također se mogu osjećati odgovorne ne samo za vlastiti život nego i za život svoje djece. Zbog toga moraju biti jače i ostati vitalne duže od muškaraca - kaže Robine i naglašava da sve dok je muškarac zdrav i bez invaliditeta, njegova razina smrtnosti jednaka je kao i ona u žena.

- Muškarci slabije preživljavaju ako nisu vrlo dobrog zdravlja, dok su žene mnogo otpornije na narušeno zdravlje - kaže Robine i dodaje da je to fascinantno jer je dobro poznato da naše društvo ne tretira žene baš najbolje pa bismo zapravo očekivali suprotno.

Općenito se vjeruje (a i znanost to dokazuje) da žene žive duže nego muškarci, ali postoje i novi pokazatelji koji kažu da visina utječe na životni vijek. Konkretno, niži ljudi žive duže od viših, piše Živim.

Dva stručnjaka za dugovječnost, JeanMarie Robine, demograf koji proučava odnos između zdravlja i dugovječnosti, i David Sinclair, suvoditelj Paul F. Glenn centra za biologiju istraživanja starenja na Harvard Medical School, iznijeli su svoje teorije kojima to objašnjavaju.

- Nekad se nije smatralo dobrim biti nizak, niski ljudi često su se slabije hranili tijekom prve godine života, nisu se mogli pravilno razvijati i boriti protiv zaraznih bolesti. Povijesno gledano, niži rast povezivali smo s lošim razvojem i visokom razinom smrtnosti. Ali to se drastično...
