Lee 'Scratch' Perry, utjecajni jamajčanski glazbenik, pjevač i producent koji je pomaknuo granice reggaea i duba, umro je u nedjelju u dobi od 85 godina.

Uzrok smrti nije naveden, no premijer Jamajke Andrew Holness na Twitteru je potvrdio vijest, izrazio sućut obitelji i napisao da je reggae vizionar umro u bolnici Noel Holmes u zapadnom jamajčanskom gradu Lucei.

"Danas je Jamajka izgubila veliku glazbenu ikonu koja je nadahnula mnoge", napisao je Holness

Producent koji je radio za brojne glazbenike, među kojima i za Boba Marleyja, osoba je čiji je talent nadilazio vrijeme i žanr, a njegov utjecaj bio je očit u raznim glazbenim žanrovima, od hip hopa do post-punka, od Beastie Boysa do Clasha.

Rođen 20. ožujka 1936. u ruralnom jamajčanskom gradu Kendalu, Rainford Hugh 'Lee' Perry školu je napustio s 15 godina te se šezdesetih preselio u Kingston.

"Moj otac je bio fizički radnik, a majka je radila na polju. Bili smo jako siromašni. Išao sam u školu..., ali nisam naučio ništa. Sve što sam naučio potječe iz prirode", rekao je Perry za britanski glazbeni časopis NME 1984. godine.

"Kad sam napustio školu, mogao sam raditi samo na terenu, fizičke poslove, težak, naporan rad. Nije mi se to sviđalo. Pa sam počeo igrati domino. Kroz domino sam vježbao um i naučio čitati misli drugih. To se pokazalo vrlo korisnim kasnije u životu", ispripovijedao je.

Njegova glazbena karijera započela je krajem pedesetih kad ga je kao asistenta angažirao Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd, voditelj reggae studija i izdavačke kuće Studio One. Kasnije je postao glazbeni skaut, DJ, voditelj trgovine i na kraju snimatelj za izdavačku kuću. Svoj nadimak ‘Scratch’ stekao je na ranoj snimci, ‘The Chicken Scratch’ 1965. godine.

Godine 1968. osnovao je vlastitu izdavačku kuću "Upsetter Records", a 1973. izgradio studio u dvorištu u Kingstonu, nazvavši ga "Black Ark", koji će roditi nebrojene reggae i dub klasike. Ondje je pomicao granice i eksperimentirao s bubnjarskim strojevima i ostalom studijskom opremom - snimio je pucanj oružja, zvuk razbijenog stakla i glasanje životinja, a koristio je i kamenje, vodu ili kuhinjsko posuđe.

Slavu je, osim na Jamajci, stekao i u inozemstvu, posebno u Britaniji, gdje su hvalili njegovu inventivnu produkciju.

Produciravši niz značajnih ploča zajedno s Bobom Marleyjem, surađivao je i s Maxom Romeom, Juniorom Murvinom i grupom The Congos.

Perry je bio ključan za proboj jamajčanske glazbe na međunarodnu scenu.

"Lee Perry je glazbeni Salvador Dali", rekao je Keith Richards za Rolling Stone 2010. godine. "On je misterij. Svijet je njegov instrument. Samo morate slušati. Više od producenta on zna nadahnuti dušu umjetnika jer ima dar zapažanja zahvaljujući kojem ne samo da čuje zvukove koji dolaze niotkuda, već ih uspijeva prenijeti glazbenicima. Scratch je šaman", rekao je tada Richards za časopis.

Perry navodno spalio studio 'Black ark' 1983. godine, uvjeren da je opsjednut zlim duhovima. Počeo je putovati i živjeti u inozemstvu, a naposljetku se neko vrijeme skrasio u Švicarskoj sa svojom obitelji, nastavivši raditi do smrti.

Tijekom karijere producirao više od 1000 snimaka, a 2002. godine osvojio je Grammy za najbolji reggae album ‘Jamaican E.T.’

Lee 'Scratch' Perry, utjecajni jamajčanski glazbenik, pjevač i producent koji je pomaknuo granice reggaea i duba, umro je u nedjelju u dobi od 85 godina.

Uzrok smrti nije naveden, no premijer Jamajke Andrew Holness na Twitteru je potvrdio vijest, izrazio sućut obitelji i napisao da je reggae vizionar umro u bolnici Noel Holmes u zapadnom jamajčanskom gradu Lucei.

"Danas je Jamajka izgubila veliku glazbenu ikonu koja je nadahnula mnoge", napisao je Holness

Producent koji je radio za brojne glazbenike, među kojima i za Boba Marleyja, osoba je čiji je talent nadilazio vrijeme i žanr, a njegov utjecaj bio je očit u raznim glazbenim žanrovima, od hip hopa do post-punka, od Beastie Boysa do Clasha.

Rođen 20. ožujka 1936. u ruralnom jamajčanskom gradu Kendalu, Rainford Hugh 'Lee' Perry školu je napustio s 15 godina te se šezdesetih preselio u Kingston.

"Moj otac je bio fizički radnik, a majka je radila na polju. Bili smo jako siromašni. Išao sam u školu..., ali nisam naučio ništa. Sve što sam naučio potječe iz prirode", rekao je Perry za britanski glazbeni časopis NME 1984. godine.

"Kad sam napustio školu, mogao sam raditi samo na terenu, fizičke poslove, težak, naporan rad. Nije mi se to sviđalo. Pa sam počeo igrati domino. Kroz domino sam vježbao um i naučio čitati misli drugih. To se pokazalo vrlo korisnim kasnije u životu", ispripovijedao je.

Njegova glazbena karijera započela je krajem pedesetih kad ga je kao asistenta angažirao Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd, voditelj reggae studija i izdavačke kuće Studio One. Kasnije je postao glazbeni skaut, DJ, voditelj trgovine i na kraju snimatelj za izdavačku kuću. Svoj nadimak ‘Scratch’ stekao je na ranoj snimci, ‘The Chicken Scratch’ 1965. godine.

Godine 1968. osnovao je vlastitu izdavačku kuću "Upsetter Records", a 1973. izgradio studio u dvorištu u Kingstonu, nazvavši ga "Black Ark", koji će roditi nebrojene reggae i dub klasike. Ondje je pomicao granice i eksperimentirao s bubnjarskim strojevima i ostalom studijskom opremom - snimio je pucanj oružja, zvuk razbijenog stakla i glasanje životinja, a koristio je i kamenje, vodu ili kuhinjsko posuđe.

Slavu je, osim na Jamajci, stekao i u inozemstvu, posebno u Britaniji, gdje su hvalili njegovu inventivnu produkciju.

Produciravši niz značajnih ploča zajedno s Bobom Marleyjem, surađivao je i s Maxom Romeom, Juniorom Murvinom i grupom The Congos.

Perry je bio ključan za proboj jamajčanske glazbe na međunarodnu scenu.

"Lee Perry je glazbeni Salvador Dali", rekao je Keith Richards za Rolling Stone 2010. godine. "On je misterij. Svijet je njegov instrument. Samo morate slušati. Više od producenta on zna nadahnuti dušu umjetnika jer ima dar zapažanja zahvaljujući kojem ne samo da čuje zvukove koji dolaze niotkuda, već ih uspijeva prenijeti glazbenicima. Scratch je šaman", rekao je tada Richards za časopis.

Perry navodno spalio studio 'Black ark' 1983. godine, uvjeren da je opsjednut zlim duhovima. Počeo je putovati i živjeti u inozemstvu, a naposljetku se neko vrijeme skrasio u Švicarskoj sa svojom obitelji, nastavivši raditi do smrti.

Tijekom karijere producirao više od 1000 snimaka, a 2002. godine osvojio je Grammy za najbolji reggae album ‘Jamaican E.T.’
