Stručnjaci kažu da je u slučaju nedostatka kalcija ključno uočiti problem prije nego što izazove ozbiljnu štetu. To je zato što, u najtežim slučajevima, niske razine kalcija mogu dovesti do napadaja, zatajenja srca ili grčeva u grlu koji mogu uzrokovati poteškoće s disanjem.
