Planina odbačene odjeće, uključujući božićne veste i skijaške čizme, predstavlja čudan prizor u čileanskoj Atacami, najsušoj pustinji na svijetu, koja sve više pati od zagađenja stvorenog brzom modom. Društveni učinak raširenog konzumerizma u industriji odjeće – kao što je dječji rad u tvornicama ili podrugljive plaće – dobro je poznat, ali pogubni učinak na okoliš manje je javan.

Čile je dugo bio središte rabljene i neprodane odjeće, proizvedene u Kini ili Bangladešu i koja prolazi kroz Europu, Aziju ili Sjedinjene Države prije nego što stigne u Čile, gdje se preprodaje diljem Latinske Amerike. Oko 59.000 tona odjeće svake godine stigne u luku Iquique u slobodnoj zoni Alto Hospicio u sjevernom Čileu. Prema izvješću UN-a iz 2019., globalna proizvodnja odjeće udvostručila se između 2000. i 2014., a industrija je “odgovorna za 20 posto ukupne potrošnje vode na globalnoj razini”. Za izradu jednog para traperica potrebno je 7.500 litara vode. U istom izvješću navodi se da proizvodnja odjeće i obuće doprinosi 8 posto globalnih stakleničkih plinova, te da se "svake sekunde zakopa ili spali količina tekstila jednaka kamionu za smeće".

Društveni učinak raširenog konzumerizma u industriji odjeće – kao što je dječji rad u tvornicama ili podrugljive plaće – dobro je poznat, ali pogubni učinak na okoliš manje je javan.

Čile je dugo bio središte rabljene i neprodane odjeće, proizvedene u Kini ili Bangladešu i koja prolazi kroz Europu, Aziju ili Sjedinjene Države prije nego što stigne u Čile, gdje se preprodaje diljem Latinske Amerike. Oko 59.000 tona odjeće svake godine stigne u luku Iquique u slobodnoj zoni Alto Hospicio u sjevernom Čileu. Trgovci odjećom iz glavnog grada Santiaga, 1.800 km južno, kupuju nešto od toga, dok se mnogo krijumčari u druge zemlje Latinske Amerike. Prema izvješću UN-a iz 2019., globalna proizvodnja odjeće udvostručila se između 2000. i 2014., a industrija je “odgovorna za 20 posto ukupne potrošnje vode na globalnoj razini”.
