U Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama započelo je prvo kliničko ispitivanje s tabletom koje poništavaju trovanje nuklearnim zračenjem. Istraživanje se provodi u Michiganu, gdje će 42 volontera primiti lijek HOPO 14-1 u obliku oralne tablete te će biti praćeni kako bi se vidjelo koliko se dobro lijek apsorbira i izlučuje otrove iz tijela.

Nacionalni institut za alergije i zarazne bolesti (NIAID), koji financira istraživanje navodi kako bi, ako rezultati istraživanja budu uspješni - tretman mogao postati dostupan građanima do 2024. godine. S obzirom na rat u Ukrajini i Putinove prijetnje nuklearnim oružjem, povećani su strahovi od radijacije pa ovakva istraživanja dobivaju dodatni publicitet.

U ovom kliničkom istraživanju kod zdravih osoba pratit će se sigurnost, podnošljivost i obrada u tijelu rastućih doza ispitivanog lijeka. Unutarnja radioaktivna kontaminacija nastaje kada se radioaktivni elementi apsorbiraju kroz ozlijeđenu kožu, odnosno ako se udahnu ili progutaju. To se može dogoditi kao posljedica nesreće u nuklearnoj elektrani ili detonacije tzv. "prljave bombe" odnosno oružja s nuklearnom bojevom glavom. Kako se atomi radioaktivnih elemenata raspadaju, emitiraju ionizirajuće zračenje koje može oštetiti DNK, tkiva i organe. Jedan od načina da se ta šteta smanji je hitna konzumacija lijeka koji se veže na teške metale kako bi ih što brže uklonio iz tijela nakon što dođe do kontaminacije.

Američka Uprava za hranu i lijekove dosad je odobrila dva proizvoda za uklanjanje unutarnje radioaktivne kontaminacije. Ove lijekove, oba temeljena na dietilentriamin pentaacetatu (DTPA), intravenski daje liječnik i mogu ukloniti tri radioaktivna elementa: plutonij, americij i kurij.

Nasuprot tome, HOPO 14-1 je formuliran kao oralna kapsula, što je jednostavnije za primjenu.

Predklinička istraživanja su pokazala da HOPO 14-1 može učinkovito ukloniti mnoge radioaktivne kontaminante, uključujući uran i neptunij uz plutonij, americij i kurij. Ove studije su također otkrile da je HOPO 14-1 do 100 puta učinkovitiji od DTPA u vezivanju i uklanjanju ovih radioaktivnih elemenata.

Istraživački tim u Plymouthu i Michiganu, će u istraživanje uključiti 42 zdrava sudionika u dobi od 18 do 65 godina u sedam grupa od po šest osoba. Svaki sudionik u prvoj skupini dobit će dozu od 100 miligrama HOPO 14-1. Sljedeće skupine će primati sve veće doze ispitivanog lijeka do 7500 mg u posljednjoj skupini ako se niže doze pokažu sigurnima. Sudionici će biti podvrgnuti intenzivnom sigurnosnom praćenju i pratit će se 14 dana kako bi se izmjerila apsorpcija, distribucija i eliminacija ispitivanog lijeka iz tijela.

U Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama započelo je prvo kliničko ispitivanje s tabletom koje poništavaju trovanje nuklearnim zračenjem. Istraživanje se provodi u Michiganu, gdje će 42 volontera primiti lijek HOPO 14-1 u obliku oralne tablete te će biti praćeni kako bi se vidjelo koliko se dobro lijek apsorbira i izlučuje otrove iz tijela.

Nacionalni institut za alergije i zarazne bolesti (NIAID), koji financira istraživanje navodi kako bi, ako rezultati istraživanja budu uspješni - tretman mogao postati dostupan građanima do 2024. godine. S obzirom na rat u Ukrajini i Putinove prijetnje nuklearnim oružjem, povećani su strahovi od radijacije pa ovakva istraživanja dobivaju dodatni publicitet.

U ovom kliničkom istraživanju kod zdravih osoba pratit će se sigurnost, podnošljivost i obrada u tijelu rastućih doza ispitivanog lijeka. Unutarnja radioaktivna kontaminacija nastaje kada se radioaktivni elementi apsorbiraju kroz ozlijeđenu kožu, odnosno ako se udahnu ili progutaju. To se može dogoditi kao posljedica nesreće u nuklearnoj elektrani ili detonacije tzv. "prljave bombe" odnosno oružja s nuklearnom bojevom glavom. Kako se atomi radioaktivnih elemenata raspadaju, emitiraju ionizirajuće zračenje koje može oštetiti DNK, tkiva i organe. Jedan od načina da se ta šteta smanji je hitna konzumacija lijeka koji se veže na teške metale kako bi ih što brže uklonio iz tijela nakon što dođe do kontaminacije.

Američka Uprava za hranu i lijekove dosad je odobrila dva proizvoda za uklanjanje unutarnje radioaktivne kontaminacije. Ove lijekove, oba temeljena na dietilentriamin pentaacetatu (DTPA), intravenski daje liječnik i mogu ukloniti tri radioaktivna elementa: plutonij, americij i kurij.

Nasuprot tome, HOPO 14-1 je formuliran kao oralna kapsula, što je jednostavnije za primjenu.

Predklinička istraživanja su pokazala da HOPO 14-1 može učinkovito ukloniti mnoge radioaktivne kontaminante, uključujući uran i neptunij uz plutonij, americij i kurij. Ove studije su također otkrile da je HOPO 14-1 do 100 puta učinkovitiji od DTPA u vezivanju i uklanjanju ovih radioaktivnih elemenata.

Istraživački tim u Plymouthu i Michiganu, će u istraživanje uključiti 42 zdrava sudionika u dobi od 18 do 65 godina u sedam grupa od po šest osoba. Svaki sudionik u prvoj skupini dobit će dozu od 100 miligrama HOPO 14-1. Sljedeće skupine će primati sve veće doze ispitivanog lijeka do 7500 mg u posljednjoj skupini ako se niže doze pokažu sigurnima. Sudionici će biti podvrgnuti intenzivnom sigurnosnom praćenju i pratit će se 14 dana kako bi se izmjerila apsorpcija, distribucija i eliminacija ispitivanog lijeka iz tijela.
