U četvrtak, kad je otkazan Bostonski maraton, prekinuta je tradicija duga 124 godine tijekom kojih je ovo sportsko natjecanje neprekidno održavano.

Ulicama Bostona trebalo se trčati 20. travnja, ali su zbog pandemije izazvane širenjem koronavirusa organizatori odlučili odgoditi utrku za rujan. Međutim, aktualno stanje s pandemijom u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama ne dopušta planiranje ovakvog masovnog događaja u bližoj budućnosti pa su organizatori bili prisiljeni otkazati ovogodišnji maraton.

No, bit će održana "virtualna utrka" u kojoj će natjecatelji zaraditi medalju, ako će podastrijeti dokaz da su 14. rujna istrčali maratonsku dionicu od 42 kilometra i 195 metara.

- Kad već ne možemo dovesti svijet u Boston u rujnu, naš je plan da Boston odvedemo u svijet za povijesno 124. izdanje Bostonskog maratona - izjavio je u četvrtak izvršni direktor Bostonskog atletskog saveza Tom Grilk.

Povijest ovog natjecanja seže u daleku 1897. kad se na startu u Ashlandu našlo 15 atletičara koji su odlučili dotrčati do centra Bostona u čast prvih modernih Olimpijskih igara koje su održane godinu prije u Ateni. Maraton se neprekidno održavao i tijekom Prvog i Drugog svjetskog rata, a preživio je i bombaški napad 2013.

No, zbog opasnosti od širenja koronavirusa među više od 30.000 ljudi koji svake godine sudjeluju kao natjecatelji te među gledateljima kojih se zna okupiti do jednog milijuna uz trasu maratona, organizatori nisu imali drugog izbora već otkazati ovogodišnje izdanje.

Tijekom maratona se u Bostonu svake godine obrne više od 200 milijuna dolara, a Bostonski atletski savez i trkači uspijevaju skupiti oko 40 milijuna dolara u humanitarne svrhe.

Organizatori se nisu željeli povesti za primjerom Tokijskog maratona koji je održan u ožujku, ali samo uz sudjelovanje 200-njak profesionalnih maratonaca.

- To nije Bostonski maraton. Mi smo uključivi. Bostonski maraton je za sve - izjavio je bostonski gradonačelnik Marty Walsh.

Sljedeće godine bi maraton trebao biti održan 19. travnja, a 125. izdanje je na rasporedu 18. travnja 2022.

U četvrtak, kad je otkazan Bostonski maraton, prekinuta je tradicija duga 124 godine tijekom kojih je ovo sportsko natjecanje neprekidno održavano.

Ulicama Bostona trebalo se trčati 20. travnja, ali su zbog pandemije izazvane širenjem koronavirusa organizatori odlučili odgoditi utrku za rujan. Međutim, aktualno stanje s pandemijom u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama ne dopušta planiranje ovakvog masovnog događaja u bližoj budućnosti pa su organizatori bili prisiljeni otkazati ovogodišnji maraton.

No, bit će održana "virtualna utrka" u kojoj će natjecatelji zaraditi medalju, ako će podastrijeti dokaz da su 14. rujna istrčali maratonsku dionicu od 42 kilometra i 195 metara.

- Kad već ne možemo dovesti svijet u Boston u rujnu, naš je plan da Boston odvedemo u svijet za povijesno 124. izdanje Bostonskog maratona - izjavio je u četvrtak izvršni direktor Bostonskog atletskog saveza Tom Grilk.

Povijest ovog natjecanja seže u daleku 1897. kad se na startu u Ashlandu našlo 15 atletičara koji su odlučili dotrčati do centra Bostona u čast prvih modernih Olimpijskih igara koje su održane godinu prije u Ateni. Maraton se neprekidno održavao i tijekom Prvog i Drugog svjetskog rata, a preživio je i bombaški napad 2013.

No, zbog opasnosti od širenja koronavirusa među više od 30.000 ljudi koji svake godine sudjeluju kao natjecatelji te među gledateljima kojih se zna okupiti do jednog milijuna uz trasu maratona, organizatori nisu imali drugog izbora već otkazati ovogodišnje izdanje.

Tijekom maratona se u Bostonu svake godine obrne više od 200 milijuna dolara, a Bostonski atletski savez i trkači uspijevaju skupiti oko 40 milijuna dolara u humanitarne svrhe.

Organizatori se nisu željeli povesti za primjerom Tokijskog maratona koji je održan u ožujku, ali samo uz sudjelovanje 200-njak profesionalnih maratonaca.

- To nije Bostonski maraton. Mi smo uključivi. Bostonski maraton je za sve - izjavio je bostonski gradonačelnik Marty Walsh.

Sljedeće godine bi maraton trebao biti održan 19. travnja, a 125. izdanje je na rasporedu 18. travnja 2022.
