Duže od godinu dana živimo s koronavirusom i unatoč tome što su znanstvenici kao nikad prije, u iznimno kratkom vremenu od pojave bolesti uspjeli proizvesti kvalitetna cjepiva, pandemiji se i dalje ne vidi kraj. Štoviše, novi sojevi i podaci koji dolaze iz susjedne Italije, Slovenije ili dalekog Brazila kao da nas vraćaju na početak, godinu dana unatrag i sve češće se pitamo hoćemo li se ovog gadnog virusa ikad riješiti?

Ako je suditi po znanstvenim radovima i tumačenjima epidemiologa i virologa, korone se možda i nikad nećemo riješiti kao što se nismo riješili ni HIV-a, ali se zahvaljujući lijekovima infekcija može držati pod kontrolom.

Ipak, iako se očekuje da će virus biti s nama još dugo, to ne znači da će čitavo vrijeme predstavljati jednaku prijetnju kao u posljednjih godinu dana. Mnogi virolozi vjeruju da će s vremenom bolest COVID-19, koju virus SARS-CoV-2 uzrokuje, oslabjeti i biti poput obične prehlade. Takav je scenarij moguć kako ljudi budu razvijali imunitet tijekom vremena, bilo zarazom ili cijepljenjem.

- Sada kada imamo mnogo virusologa i epidemiologa koji tvrde da će koronavirus postati endemski i cirkulirati i dalje u populaciji u svim godišnjim dobima, morat ćemo se naviknuti na život uz virus. Nažalost, uz nekoliko iznimaka, zarazne bolesti nikada ne nestaju. Čak i ako su se pojavile i prije tisuću godina – podsjeća Nuekhet Varlik, profesor na Sveučilištu Južne Karoline u Americi.

Bolesti poput tuberkuloze, gube, ospica i dalje muče svijet i prate ga tisućljećima, unatoč cjepivima i lijekovima. Ni virus španjolske gripe nikada nije potpuno nestao.

Boginje i malarija 

Postoji ipak jedan izuzetak, a to su velike boginje. Cijepljenjem su iskorijenjene, a kampanja koju je vodila Svjetska zdravstvena organizacija sedamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća bila je krajnje uspješna. Već 1980. proglašeno je da su boginje iskorijenjene i za sada je to prva ljudska bolest koja je u potpunosti obuzdana i poražena.

Na našim prostorima za vrijeme bivše države zagrebački je Imunološki zavod proizvodio cjepivo protiv velikih boginja.

U to doba bivše SFRJ, kada smo imali domaću proizvodnju cjepiva, Imunološki zavod je za jedan vikend proizvodio po 700.000 doza cjepiva, a u tri dana protiv boginja se cijepilo  2,2 milijuna građana Hrvatske. Danas nemaju licencu ni za tetanus, pa čak ni za protuotrov za zmijski ugriz. 

Boginje su ipak iznimka, jer zarazne bolesti nažalost obično ne nestaju. Malarija je primjerice stara koliko i čovječanstvo. Iako su napori liječnika doveli do određenih uspjeha, u svijetu i dalje ima godišnje preko 400 tisuća oboljelih od malarije. Malo tko zna da je kuge, za koju većina misle da je nestala, još uvijek ima. Kuga je bila jedna od najsmrtonosnijih zaraznih bolesti u povijesti čovječanstva, a proteklih 5000 godina bilo je izuzetno mnogo lokalnih epidemija. U tri evidentirane pandemije život je izgubilo stotine milijuna ljudi.

Duže od godinu dana živimo s koronavirusom i unatoč tome što su znanstvenici kao nikad prije, u iznimno kratkom vremenu od pojave bolesti uspjeli proizvesti kvalitetna cjepiva, pandemiji se i dalje ne vidi kraj. Štoviše, novi sojevi i podaci koji dolaze iz susjedne Italije, Slovenije ili dalekog Brazila kao da nas vraćaju na početak, godinu dana unatrag i sve češće se pitamo hoćemo li se ovog gadnog virusa ikad riješiti?

Ako je suditi po znanstvenim radovima i tumačenjima epidemiologa i virologa, korone se možda i nikad nećemo riješiti kao što se nismo riješili ni HIV-a, ali se zahvaljujući lijekovima infekcija može držati pod kontrolom.

Ipak, iako se očekuje da će virus biti s nama još dugo, to ne znači da će čitavo vrijeme predstavljati jednaku prijetnju kao u posljednjih godinu dana. Mnogi virolozi vjeruju da će s vremenom bolest COVID-19, koju virus SARS-CoV-2 uzrokuje, oslabjeti i biti poput obične prehlade. Takav je scenarij moguć kako ljudi budu razvijali imunitet tijekom vremena, bilo zarazom ili cijepljenjem.

- Sada kada imamo mnogo virusologa i epidemiologa koji tvrde da će koronavirus postati endemski i cirkulirati i dalje u populaciji u svim godišnjim dobima, morat ćemo se naviknuti na život uz virus. Nažalost, uz nekoliko iznimaka, zarazne bolesti nikada ne nestaju. Čak i ako su se pojavile i prije tisuću godina – podsjeća Nuekhet Varlik, profesor na Sveučilištu Južne Karoline u Americi.

Bolesti poput tuberkuloze, gube, ospica i dalje muče svijet i prate ga tisućljećima, unatoč cjepivima i lijekovima. Ni virus španjolske gripe nikada nije potpuno nestao.

Boginje i malarija 

Postoji ipak jedan izuzetak, a to su velike boginje. Cijepljenjem su iskorijenjene, a kampanja koju je vodila Svjetska zdravstvena organizacija sedamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća bila je krajnje uspješna. Već 1980. proglašeno je da su boginje iskorijenjene i za sada je to prva ljudska bolest koja je u potpunosti obuzdana i poražena.

Na našim prostorima za vrijeme bivše države zagrebački je Imunološki zavod proizvodio cjepivo protiv velikih boginja.

U to doba bivše SFRJ, kada smo imali domaću proizvodnju cjepiva, Imunološki zavod je za jedan vikend proizvodio po 700.000 doza cjepiva, a u tri dana protiv boginja se cijepilo  2,2 milijuna građana Hrvatske. Danas nemaju licencu ni za tetanus, pa čak ni za protuotrov za zmijski ugriz. 

Boginje su ipak iznimka, jer zarazne bolesti nažalost obično ne nestaju. Malarija je primjerice stara koliko i čovječanstvo. Iako su napori liječnika doveli do određenih uspjeha, u svijetu i dalje ima godišnje preko 400 tisuća oboljelih od malarije. Malo tko zna da je kuge, za koju većina misle da je nestala, još uvijek ima. Kuga je bila jedna od najsmrtonosnijih zaraznih bolesti u povijesti čovječanstva, a proteklih 5000 godina bilo je izuzetno mnogo lokalnih epidemija. U tri evidentirane pandemije život je izgubilo stotine milijuna ljudi.

Hoćemo li se ikada riješiti korone? U povijesti čovječanstva samo je jedan opasni virus potpuno eliminiran iz populacije

Duže od godinu dana živimo s koronavirusom i unatoč tome što su znanstvenici kao nikad prije, u iznimno kratkom vremenu od pojave bolesti uspjeli proizvesti kvalitetna cjepiva, pandemiji se i dalje ne vidi kraj. Štoviše, novi sojevi i podaci koji dolaze iz susjedne Italije, Slovenije ili dalekog Brazila kao da nas vraćaju na početak, godinu dana unatrag i sve češće se pitamo hoćemo li se ovog gadnog virusa ikad riješiti?

Ako je suditi po znanstvenim radovima i tumačenjima epidemiologa i virologa, korone se možda i nikad nećemo riješiti kao što se nismo riješili ni HIV-a, ali se zahvaljujući lijekovima infekcija može držati pod kontrolom.

Ipak, iako se očekuje da će virus biti s nama još dugo, to ne znači da će čitavo vrijeme predstavljati jednaku prijetnju kao u posljednjih godinu dana. Mnogi virolozi vjeruju da će s vremenom bolest COVID-19, koju virus SARS-CoV-2 uzrokuje, oslabjeti i biti poput obične prehlade. Takav je scenarij moguć kako ljudi budu razvijali imunitet tijekom vremena, bilo zarazom ili cijepljenjem.

- Sada kada imamo mnogo virusologa i epidemiologa koji tvrde da će koronavirus postati endemski i cirkulirati i dalje u populaciji u svim godišnjim dobima, morat ćemo se naviknuti na život uz virus. Nažalost, uz nekoliko iznimaka, zarazne bolesti nikada ne nestaju. Čak i ako su se pojavile i prije tisuću godina – podsjeća Nuekhet Varlik, profesor na Sveučilištu Južne Karoline u Americi.

Bolesti poput tuberkuloze, gube, ospica i dalje muče svijet i prate ga tisućljećima, unatoč cjepivima i lijekovima. Ni virus španjolske gripe nikada nije potpuno nestao.

Boginje i malarija 

Postoji ipak jedan izuzetak, a to su velike boginje. Cijepljenjem su iskorijenjene, a kampanja koju je vodila Svjetska zdravstvena organizacija sedamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća bila je krajnje uspješna. Već 1980. proglašeno je da su boginje iskorijenjene i za sada je to prva ljudska bolest koja je u potpunosti obuzdana i poražena.

Na našim prostorima za vrijeme bivše države zagrebački je Imunološki zavod proizvodio cjepivo protiv velikih boginja.

U to doba bivše SFRJ, kada smo imali domaću proizvodnju cjepiva, Imunološki zavod je za jedan vikend proizvodio po 700.000 doza cjepiva, a u tri dana protiv boginja se cijepilo  2,2 milijuna građana Hrvatske. Danas nemaju licencu ni za tetanus, pa čak ni za protuotrov za zmijski ugriz. 

Boginje su ipak iznimka, jer zarazne bolesti nažalost obično ne nestaju. Malarija je primjerice stara koliko i čovječanstvo. Iako su napori liječnika doveli do određenih uspjeha, u svijetu i dalje ima godišnje preko 400 tisuća oboljelih od malarije. Malo tko zna da je kuge, za koju većina misle da je nestala, još uvijek ima. Kuga je bila jedna od najsmrtonosnijih zaraznih bolesti u povijesti čovječanstva, a proteklih 5000 godina bilo je izuzetno mnogo lokalnih epidemija. U tri evidentirane pandemije život je izgubilo stotine milijuna ljudi.
