Howard Blackburn (‪1859. – 1932‬.) izgubio se zajedno s Tomom Welchom u ribolovu u moru ispred Newfoundlanda. Bili su u čamcu koji je razvlačio mreže oko matičnog broda, škune Grace L. Fears, kad ih je uhvatila snježna mećava.

Kad se vrijeme smirilo, vidjeli su da je škuna otplovila ostavivši ih na pučini i počeli su veslati prema obali. Welch se brzo predao smatrajući da po velikoj hladnoći i daleko od obale nemaju nikakve šanse. Legao je na dno čamca i do idućeg jutra bio je mrtav.

Blackburn je nastavio veslati. Da bi zaštitio ruke od studeni, na njih je navukao čarape. Kad je vidio da to nije dovoljno i da će mu se ruke smrznuti, vezao ih je za vesla. Nakon pet dana, praktički bez hrane, vode i sna, doveslao je do obale.

U čamcu je bilo i Welchovo tijelo, jer ga Blackburn nije htio baciti u more želeći mu omogućiti dostojanstven pogreb.

Nakon što je došao na obalu, pokušali su mu spasiti ruke i tabane, ali promrzline su bile takve da je ostao bez svih prstiju na obje ruke i bez nekoliko prstiju na nogama.

Nakon oporavka postao je uspješan biznismen, ali more ga je i dalje privlačilo: 1899. i 1901. je kao solo jedriličar preplovio Atlantik. Prvi put od Amerike do Engleske, a drugi put do Portugala.

Howard Blackburn (‪1859. – 1932‬.) izgubio se zajedno s Tomom Welchom u ribolovu u moru ispred Newfoundlanda. Bili su u čamcu koji je razvlačio mreže oko matičnog broda, škune Grace L. Fears, kad ih je uhvatila snježna mećava.

Kad se vrijeme smirilo, vidjeli su da je škuna otplovila ostavivši ih na pučini i počeli su veslati prema obali. Welch se brzo predao smatrajući da po velikoj hladnoći i daleko od obale nemaju nikakve šanse. Legao je na dno čamca i do idućeg jutra bio je mrtav.

Blackburn je nastavio veslati. Da bi zaštitio ruke od studeni, na njih je navukao čarape. Kad je vidio da to nije dovoljno i da će mu se ruke smrznuti, vezao ih je za vesla. Nakon pet dana, praktički bez hrane, vode i sna, doveslao je do obale.

U čamcu je bilo i Welchovo tijelo, jer ga Blackburn nije htio baciti u more želeći mu omogućiti dostojanstven pogreb.

Nakon što je došao na obalu, pokušali su mu spasiti ruke i tabane, ali promrzline su bile takve da je ostao bez svih prstiju na obje ruke i bez nekoliko prstiju na nogama.

Nakon oporavka postao je uspješan biznismen, ali more ga je i dalje privlačilo: 1899. i 1901. je kao solo jedriličar preplovio Atlantik. Prvi put od Amerike do Engleske, a drugi put do Portugala.

Howard Blackburn (‪1859. – 1932‬.) izgubio se zajedno s Tomom Welchom u ribolovu u moru ispred Newfoundlanda. Bili su u čamcu koji je razvlačio mreže oko matičnog broda, škune Grace L. Fears, kad ih je uhvatila snježna mećava.

Kad se vrijeme smirilo, vidjeli su da je škuna otplovila ostavivši ih na pučini i počeli su veslati prema obali. Welch se brzo predao smatrajući da po velikoj hladnoći i daleko od obale nemaju nikakve šanse. Legao je na dno čamca i do idućeg jutra bio je mrtav.

Blackburn je nastavio veslati. Da bi zaštitio ruke od studeni, na njih je navukao čarape. Kad je vidio da to nije dovoljno i da će mu se ruke smrznuti, vezao ih je za vesla. Nakon pet dana, praktički bez hrane, vode i sna, doveslao je do obale.

U čamcu je bilo i Welchovo tijelo, jer ga Blackburn nije htio baciti u more želeći mu omogućiti dostojanstven pogreb.

Nakon što je došao na obalu, pokušali su mu spasiti ruke i tabane, ali promrzline su bile takve da je ostao bez svih prstiju na obje ruke i bez nekoliko prstiju na nogama.

Nakon oporavka postao je uspješan biznismen, ali more ga je i dalje privlačilo: 1899. i 1901. je kao solo jedriličar preplovio Atlantik. Prvi put od Amerike do Engleske, a drugi put do Portugala.
