Koju od dviju osnovnih smola za reparaciju odabrati, poliestersku ili epoksidnu, ovisi o popravku koji planirate obaviti, te o tehnološkim svojstvima tih dviju smola. 

Poliesterska se pri nanošenju neće u potpunosti osušiti dok je izložena zraku, tako da se s njom može brzo raditi po principu sloj na sloj odmah nakon želiranja, pri čemu će se svaki idući sloj čvrsto spojiti s prethodnim na molekularnoj razini.

No, pri popravljanju oštećenja, primjerice na trupu broda, smola mora funkcionirati i kao ljepilo kako bi se zakrpa od laminata čvrsto uhvatila za okolnu površinu. Poliesterska smola jest i dobro ljepilo, ali ne toliko dobro kao epoksidna smola.

Slabije lijepljenje

Načelno, vrijedi pravilo da će vlačna čvrstoća zakrpe tretirane poliesterskom smolom biti oko 20 posto slabija nego u slučaju korištenja epoksidne smole.

To epoksidnu smolu čini obično najboljim izborom za popravke stakloplastike, to više što je i daleko čvršća brana za prodiranje vlage i ne stvara zračne mjehuriće u laminatu. No, postoje i neke iznimke.

Primjerice, kada se popravak planira završiti nanošenjem gelcoata, a ne epoksidnog završnog premaza, za prethodna laminiranja ili punjenja treba koristiti poliestersku smolu.

Razlog je što epoksidna smola, iako se odlično hvata na podlogu od poliestera, ne ostvaruje tako čvrstu kemijsku vezu s gelcoatom koji se nanese na nju. Zbog toga je bolje za popravke koji će biti finiširani nanošenjem sloja gelcoata koristiti poliestersku smolu.

Trošak popravka također može biti važna stavka prilikom odluke koju smolu izabrati za rad. Epoksidna smola je, naime, tri do pet puta skuplja od poliesterske. To je relativno beznačajan trošak za male popravke, ali kada je oštećena velika površina, korištenje poliesterske smole za popravak značajno smanjuje ukupan trošak zahvata.

Priprema podloge

No, koju god od ovih dviju smola odabrali, iznimno je važno dobro pripremiti podloge na koje će se nanositi i hvatati slojevi laminata natopljeni smolom.

Prvo je potrebno cijelo područje rada dobro isprati slatkom vodom i blagim deterdžentom, a potom i nekim od posebnih sredstava za uklanjanje voska.

Tako pripremljenu površinu potrebno je još dobro izbrusiti brusnim papirom, pri čemu u slučaju rada s poliesterskom smolom za brušenje treba koristiti grublji brusni papir (gradacije 40), jer će se na taj način pojačati prianjanje poliesterske smole za podlogu, budući da smo već kazali da ona 20 posto slabije lijepi u odnosu na epoksidnu smolu.

Na kraju treba površinu dobro otprašiti, najbolje komprimiranim zrakom ili barem čistom i mekom krpom, i tek onda početi reparaciju.

Poliesterska se pri nanošenju neće u potpunosti osušiti dok je izložena zraku, tako da se s njom može brzo raditi po principu sloj na sloj odmah nakon želiranja, pri čemu će se svaki idući sloj čvrsto spojiti s prethodnim na molekularnoj razini.

No, pri popravljanju oštećenja, primjerice na trupu broda, smola mora funkcionirati i kao ljepilo kako bi se zakrpa od laminata čvrsto uhvatila za okolnu površinu. Poliesterska smola jest i dobro ljepilo, ali ne toliko dobro kao epoksidna smola.

Slabije lijepljenje

Načelno, vrijedi pravilo da će vlačna čvrstoća zakrpe tretirane poliesterskom smolom biti oko 20 posto slabija nego u slučaju korištenja epoksidne smole.

To epoksidnu smolu čini obično najboljim izborom za popravke stakloplastike, to više što je i daleko čvršća brana za prodiranje vlage i ne stvara zračne mjehuriće u laminatu. No, postoje i neke iznimke.

Primjerice, kada se popravak planira završiti nanošenjem gelcoata, a ne epoksidnog završnog premaza, za prethodna laminiranja ili punjenja treba koristiti poliestersku smolu.

Razlog je što epoksidna smola, iako se odlično hvata na podlogu od poliestera, ne ostvaruje tako čvrstu kemijsku vezu s gelcoatom koji se nanese na nju. Zbog toga je bolje za popravke koji će biti finiširani nanošenjem sloja gelcoata koristiti poliestersku smolu.

Trošak popravka također može biti važna stavka prilikom odluke koju smolu izabrati za rad. Epoksidna smola je, naime, tri do pet puta skuplja od poliesterske. To je relativno beznačajan trošak za male popravke, ali kada je oštećena velika površina, korištenje poliesterske smole za popravak značajno smanjuje ukupan trošak zahvata.

Priprema podloge

No, koju god od ovih dviju smola odabrali, iznimno je važno dobro pripremiti podloge na koje će se nanositi i hvatati slojevi laminata natopljeni smolom.

Prvo je potrebno cijelo područje rada dobro isprati slatkom vodom i blagim deterdžentom, a potom i nekim od posebnih sredstava za uklanjanje voska.

Tako pripremljenu površinu potrebno je još dobro izbrusiti brusnim papirom, pri čemu u slučaju rada s poliesterskom smolom za brušenje treba koristiti grublji brusni papir (gradacije 40), jer će se na taj način pojačati prianjanje poliesterske smole za podlogu, budući da smo već kazali da ona 20 posto slabije lijepi u odnosu na epoksidnu smolu.

Na kraju treba površinu dobro otprašiti, najbolje komprimiranim zrakom ili barem čistom i mekom krpom, i tek onda početi reparaciju.
