Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini je bio novinar, političar i vođa Nacionalne fašističke stranke u Italiji. S vremenom su mu njegova politička zalaganja donijela i mjesto premijera, funkciju koju je obavljao od 1922. do 1943. godine, piše National Geographic.

Tijekom nešto malo više od 20 godina apsolutne vlasti, stvorio je fašističku državu koja se temeljila na njegovoj osobnosti i karizmi, kontroli medija i progonu protivnika. Ovo mu je donijelo i nadimak "Il duce" ili u prijevodu "Vođa", ali i kraj kakav nije priželjkivao.

Iako se Benito Mussolini tijekom Münchenskog sporazuma u lipnju 1938. godine zalagao za mir u Europi, već je naredne godine u travnju potpisao Versajski ugovor s Hitlerom. Kao poputno podčinjeni - i on i njegova država - morali su slijediti nacističku ideologiju i provoditi radikalnu politiku.

Francuskoj je objavio rat u lipnju 1940. godine, uvjeren u pobjedu Nemačke i u ideju da će se sukob završiti za svega par tjedana. Ovo je bila loša procjena koja će ga na kraju koštati mnogo toga.

Nakon napada na Grčku u studenom iste godine, svima je postalo jasno da njegove snage ne mogu učiniti mnogo toga na bojnom polju. Porazi su se nizali, a kada je 1943. godine došlo do anglo-američkog iskrcavanja na Siciliju - većina Vođinih kolega već se okrenula protiv njega.

Kralj mu je oduzeo mandat, formirana je nova vlada, a ubrzo je uhapšen i stavljen u kućni pritvor. Zbog straha de će ga Nijemci pokušati osloboditi, mjesto Mussolinijevog prebivališta je često mijenjano - sve dok na planini Gran Saso nije izvršen desant od strane njemačkih snaga, nakon čega je Vođa odveden u Berlin na sastanak s Hitlerom.

Narednih godinu i pol dana je proveo u Lombardiji, a iako je javnosti djelovalo kao da ima potpunu kontrolu, sam je bio svjestan da je "marioneta" u službi nacističke Njemačke. Oko njega se okupila određena grupa još uvijek odanih fašista koji su formirali Salsku Republiku, ali sam Mussolini je svojim suradnicima tvrdio kako je umoran od svega i da je tretman SS vojnika prema njemu gori od onog u logoru.

Kako su savezničke trupe napredovale k sjeveru Italije, Mussoliniju je postalo jasno da mora pobjeći. Spakovao se i s ljubavnicom Clarom Petacci krenuo u Švicarsku na avion koji ih je trebao odvesti u Španjolsku, 25. travnja 1945. godine.

Dva dana kasnije, partizani po imenu Valerio i Bellini su ih zaustavili i predali svom komesaru. Iako su iz UN-a poslali dopis o molbi za njegovo izručenje, Mussolini i njegova ljubavnica su 28. travnja 1945. godine strijeljani po hitnom postupku s još 15 ljudi u njihovoj pratnji. Njihova tijela su potom prebačena u Milano i obješena na javnom trgu, gdje su bila kamenovana, pljuvana i ismijavana.

Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini je bio novinar, političar i vođa Nacionalne fašističke stranke u Italiji. S vremenom su mu njegova politička zalaganja donijela i mjesto premijera, funkciju koju je obavljao od 1922. do 1943. godine, piše National Geographic.

Tijekom nešto malo više od 20 godina apsolutne vlasti, stvorio je fašističku državu koja se temeljila na njegovoj osobnosti i karizmi, kontroli medija i progonu protivnika. Ovo mu je donijelo i nadimak "Il duce" ili u prijevodu "Vođa", ali i kraj kakav nije priželjkivao.

Iako se Benito Mussolini tijekom Münchenskog sporazuma u lipnju 1938. godine zalagao za mir u Europi, već je naredne godine u travnju potpisao Versajski ugovor s Hitlerom. Kao poputno podčinjeni - i on i njegova država - morali su slijediti nacističku ideologiju i provoditi radikalnu politiku.

Francuskoj je objavio rat u lipnju 1940. godine, uvjeren u pobjedu Nemačke i u ideju da će se sukob završiti za svega par tjedana. Ovo je bila loša procjena koja će ga na kraju koštati mnogo toga.

Nakon napada na Grčku u studenom iste godine, svima je postalo jasno da njegove snage ne mogu učiniti mnogo toga na bojnom polju. Porazi su se nizali, a kada je 1943. godine došlo do anglo-američkog iskrcavanja na Siciliju - većina Vođinih kolega već se okrenula protiv njega.

Kralj mu je oduzeo mandat, formirana je nova vlada, a ubrzo je uhapšen i stavljen u kućni pritvor. Zbog straha de će ga Nijemci pokušati osloboditi, mjesto Mussolinijevog prebivališta je često mijenjano - sve dok na planini Gran Saso nije izvršen desant od strane njemačkih snaga, nakon čega je Vođa odveden u Berlin na sastanak s Hitlerom.

Narednih godinu i pol dana je proveo u Lombardiji, a iako je javnosti djelovalo kao da ima potpunu kontrolu, sam je bio svjestan da je "marioneta" u službi nacističke Njemačke. Oko njega se okupila određena grupa još uvijek odanih fašista koji su formirali Salsku Republiku, ali sam Mussolini je svojim suradnicima tvrdio kako je umoran od svega i da je tretman SS vojnika prema njemu gori od onog u logoru.

Kako su savezničke trupe napredovale k sjeveru Italije, Mussoliniju je postalo jasno da mora pobjeći. Spakovao se i s ljubavnicom Clarom Petacci krenuo u Švicarsku na avion koji ih je trebao odvesti u Španjolsku, 25. travnja 1945. godine.

Dva dana kasnije, partizani po imenu Valerio i Bellini su ih zaustavili i predali svom komesaru. Iako su iz UN-a poslali dopis o molbi za njegovo izručenje, Mussolini i njegova ljubavnica su 28. travnja 1945. godine strijeljani po hitnom postupku s još 15 ljudi u njihovoj pratnji. Njihova tijela su potom prebačena u Milano i obješena na javnom trgu, gdje su bila kamenovana, pljuvana i ismijavana.
