Anne Tyler (rođena 1941. godine u Minneapolisu) plodna je spisateljica (objavila je 23 romana), višestruko nagrađivana (među ostalim, u vitrini ima i Pulitzera za književnost), čija su djela često služila kao predlošci za filmske adaptacije (po njezinu romanu Lawrence Kasdan snimio je hvaljenog "Slučajnog turista"). Nauživala se i komplimenata kritike i simpatija publike, ali je ipak teško oteti se dojmu kako njezino ime u javnosti ne zvoni onoliko glasno koliko bi trebalo.

To, međutim, i nije neko čudo znamo li da nju ne zanimaju vruće, polemički otvorene teme te društvene, odnosno političke kontroverze. Ona je vrlo dosljedno zaokupljena malim, običnim, svakodnevnim i univerzalnim temama koje čitatelji s različitih meridijana mogu jednako smatrati svojima, bez obzira na činjenicu što žive u drukčijim prilikama od junaka o kojima Tyler piše. To će reći da ova autorica ne nudi štof od kojega se kroje naslovnice tiražnih medija niti može biti naročito zanimljiva kao gošća u televizijskim debatama koje bistre pitanja od interesa za masovnu publiku. No, to znači i da nije u milosti aktivističkih snobova koji drže kako književnost uvijek i po svaku cijenu mora biti vrlo izravno društveno angažirana.

LIKOVI KOJI OŽIVLJAVAJU

"Nešto crveno pokraj ceste" njezin je najnoviji roman, u Americi objavljen prošle godine (hrvatski prijevod potpisuje Dražen Čulić). Priča je to o ni po čemu iznimnom, savršeno običnom čovjeku srednjih godina koji živi dremljivom samačkom rutinom. Micah Mortimar jedini se iz obitelji upisao na fakultet, no teško da može biti naročito ponosan na svoje profesionalne domašaje. On zapravo radi dva posla: kućepazitelj je u zgradi u kojoj živi te ima obrt za popravak računala i srodnih digitalnih uređaja. Od profesionalnog paralel-slaloma zarađuje taman toliko da može servisirati svoje skromne potrebe. Rob je navika, toliko uredan i discipliniran da se razložno upitati je li on samo pouzdan čovjek koji se trudi ostati takvim u nepouzdanu svijetu ili pati od nekog kompulzivnog poremećaja. U vezi je s Cass, učiteljicom u osnovnoj školi, ali s njom ne stanuje, nego se povremeno sastaje.

To se čini kao poprilično mršav saldo jednoga života, ali Micah se ne žali, on samog sebe doživljava kao umjereno sretnu osobu. Njegov savršeno isplanirani i u svim nijansama predvidljiv život naglo će se zakomplicirati kad mu prijateljica (ne čini mu se primjerenim da u ovim godinama koristi izraz djevojka) javi kako će možda biti prisiljena iseliti se iz stana u kojemu živi, a na vrata mu zakuca mladić brucoške dobi i statusa, koji mu kaže da je njegov sin.

Ovako izložene konture zapleta mogle bi sugerirati kako će se u romanu štošta uzbudljivog izdogađati dok čitatelj ne dospije do zadnje stranice. No, iz postavljene situacije autorica se neće izvući serijom maštovitih narativnih lupinga. Puno više od zaplitanja i rasplitanja pripovjednih očica, Tylerovu zanima slojevito, duboko i nijansirano profiliranje likova koji gotovo da oživljavaju pred čitateljem. Malo je pisaca koji su u stanju na ograničenom prostoru jedan isprva plošni, papirnati karakter napumpati do punog volumena i učiniti ga familijarno bliskim svima koji posegnu za knjigom.

ZBRINJAVANJE JUNAKA

Osim što je priča o usamljenosti, pogrešnim izborima i novim počecima, roman "Nešto crveno kraj ceste" na veoma suptilan način bavi se i suvremenom, dakle, raslojenom Amerikom. Autorica to ne čini nametljivo i glasno, stran joj je svaki pamfletistički predumišljaj, pa i dalje neće biti zanimljiva medijima koji vole glodati kosti društvenih kontroverzi, ali joj nitko ne može osporiti da je onako usput, sve kao da neće, između korica ovoga romana ponudila i poražavajući kroki društvenog prezenta u kojemu ljudi zrele dobi ili u jeseni života i dalje žive u slabo održavanim unajmljenim stanovima ili čak djecu podižu u automobilima, a rintanjem na dva posla mogu zaraditi samo za ručak i večeru.

Otkrivati svršetak bilo koje knjige nije, naravno, umjesno, ali ovaj put moram napraviti iznimku. Kritika je i prije znala prigovarati autorici da svoje junake previše voli, pa ih ne želi napuštati u teškim ili ne daj bože tragičnim situacijama, nego se prije toga potrudi da ih adekvatno zbrine. To je i ovoga puta učinila, pružajući priliku Micahu ne samo za novi, nego i za bolji početak. Tko zbog toga misli da je Anne Tyler naškodila integritetu vlastite knjige, pravo mu budi. Meni se ipak čini kako je happy end samo dodatno naglasio sumorni ambijent u kojemu se priča dogodila i suočio nas s činjenicom da je epilog mogao biti puno gori.

Anne Tyler (rođena 1941. godine u Minneapolisu) plodna je spisateljica (objavila je 23 romana), višestruko nagrađivana (među ostalim, u vitrini ima i Pulitzera za književnost), čija su djela često služila kao predlošci za filmske adaptacije (po njezinu romanu Lawrence Kasdan snimio je hvaljenog "Slučajnog turista"). Nauživala se i komplimenata kritike i simpatija publike, ali je ipak teško oteti se dojmu kako njezino ime u javnosti ne zvoni onoliko glasno koliko bi trebalo.

To, međutim, i nije neko čudo znamo li da nju ne zanimaju vruće, polemički otvorene teme te društvene, odnosno političke kontroverze. Ona je vrlo dosljedno zaokupljena malim, običnim, svakodnevnim i univerzalnim temama koje čitatelji s različitih meridijana mogu jednako smatrati svojima, bez obzira na činjenicu što žive u drukčijim prilikama od junaka o kojima Tyler piše. To će reći da ova autorica ne nudi štof od kojega se kroje naslovnice tiražnih medija niti može biti naročito zanimljiva kao gošća u televizijskim debatama koje bistre pitanja od interesa za masovnu publiku. No, to znači i da nije u milosti aktivističkih snobova koji drže kako književnost uvijek i po svaku cijenu mora biti vrlo izravno društveno angažirana.

LIKOVI KOJI OŽIVLJAVAJU

"Nešto crveno pokraj ceste" njezin je najnoviji roman, u Americi objavljen prošle godine (hrvatski prijevod potpisuje Dražen Čulić). Priča je to o ni po čemu iznimnom, savršeno običnom čovjeku srednjih godina koji živi dremljivom samačkom rutinom. Micah Mortimar jedini se iz obitelji upisao na fakultet, no teško da može biti naročito ponosan na svoje profesionalne domašaje. On zapravo radi dva posla: kućepazitelj je u zgradi u kojoj živi te ima obrt za popravak računala i srodnih digitalnih uređaja. Od profesionalnog paralel-slaloma zarađuje taman toliko da može servisirati svoje skromne potrebe. Rob je navika, toliko uredan i discipliniran da se razložno upitati je li on samo pouzdan čovjek koji se trudi ostati takvim u nepouzdanu svijetu ili pati od nekog kompulzivnog poremećaja. U vezi je s Cass, učiteljicom u osnovnoj školi, ali s njom ne stanuje, nego se povremeno sastaje.

To se čini kao poprilično mršav saldo jednoga života, ali Micah se ne žali, on samog sebe doživljava kao umjereno sretnu osobu. Njegov savršeno isplanirani i u svim nijansama predvidljiv život naglo će se zakomplicirati kad mu prijateljica (ne čini mu se primjerenim da u ovim godinama koristi izraz djevojka) javi kako će možda biti prisiljena iseliti se iz stana u kojemu živi, a na vrata mu zakuca mladić brucoške dobi i statusa, koji mu kaže da je njegov sin.

Ovako izložene konture zapleta mogle bi sugerirati kako će se u romanu štošta uzbudljivog izdogađati dok čitatelj ne dospije do zadnje stranice. No, iz postavljene situacije autorica se neće izvući serijom maštovitih narativnih lupinga. Puno više od zaplitanja i rasplitanja pripovjednih očica, Tylerovu zanima slojevito, duboko i nijansirano profiliranje likova koji gotovo da oživljavaju pred čitateljem. Malo je pisaca koji su u stanju na ograničenom prostoru jedan isprva plošni, papirnati karakter napumpati do punog volumena i učiniti ga familijarno bliskim svima koji posegnu za knjigom.

ZBRINJAVANJE JUNAKA

Osim što je priča o usamljenosti, pogrešnim izborima i novim počecima, roman "Nešto crveno kraj ceste" na veoma suptilan način bavi se i suvremenom, dakle, raslojenom Amerikom. Autorica to ne čini nametljivo i glasno, stran joj je svaki pamfletistički predumišljaj, pa i dalje neće biti zanimljiva medijima koji vole glodati kosti društvenih kontroverzi, ali joj nitko ne može osporiti da je onako usput, sve kao da neće, između korica ovoga romana ponudila i poražavajući kroki društvenog prezenta u kojemu ljudi zrele dobi ili u jeseni života i dalje žive u slabo održavanim unajmljenim stanovima ili čak djecu podižu u automobilima, a rintanjem na dva posla mogu zaraditi samo za ručak i večeru.

Otkrivati svršetak bilo koje knjige nije, naravno, umjesno, ali ovaj put moram napraviti iznimku. Kritika je i prije znala prigovarati autorici da svoje junake previše voli, pa ih ne želi napuštati u teškim ili ne daj bože tragičnim situacijama, nego se prije toga potrudi da ih adekvatno zbrine. To je i ovoga puta učinila, pružajući priliku Micahu ne samo za novi, nego i za bolji početak. Tko zbog toga misli da je Anne Tyler naškodila integritetu vlastite knjige, pravo mu budi. Meni se ipak čini kako je happy end samo dodatno naglasio sumorni ambijent u kojemu se priča dogodila i suočio nas s činjenicom da je epilog mogao biti puno gori.

Anne Tyler (rođena 1941. godine u Minneapolisu) plodna je spisateljica (objavila je 23 romana), višestruko nagrađivana (među ostalim, u vitrini ima i Pulitzera za književnost), čija su djela često služila kao predlošci za filmske adaptacije (po njezinu romanu Lawrence Kasdan snimio je hvaljenog "Slučajnog turista"). Nauživala se i komplimenata kritike i simpatija publike, ali je ipak teško oteti se dojmu kako njezino ime u javnosti ne zvoni onoliko glasno koliko bi trebalo.

To, međutim, i nije neko čudo znamo li da nju ne zanimaju vruće, polemički otvorene teme te društvene, odnosno političke kontroverze. Ona je vrlo dosljedno zaokupljena malim, običnim, svakodnevnim i univerzalnim temama koje čitatelji s različitih meridijana mogu jednako smatrati svojima, bez...
