Europska jegulja (Anguilla anguilla) je kritično ugrožena riblja vrsta. Kako bi se upozorilo na ugroženost jegulje i nužnost njezina opstanka povodom obilježavanja Svjetskog dana divljih vrsta upravo je jegulja označena kao „ambasador“ među divljim vrstama koje obitavaju u slatkovodnim i morskim ekosustavima.

Mnogo je razloga za opadanje brojnosti jegulje, od kojih su najvažniji gubitak staništa, prepreke za migracije, promjene uvjeta u oceanima, predatorstvo, zagađenje, bolesti i paraziti i preveliki izlovi. Gubitak staništa je svakako najznačajniji na primjeru melioracije močvara ispod Opuzena koje su bile i najznačajnije lovište u donjoj Neretvi. Na području Hutova blata kod Čapljine je nekadašnja močvara površine 6000 hektara smanjena na današnjih samo 600 hektara močvarnih površina. Od prepreka migracijama u delti Neretve su najznačajnije brana na ušću Male Neretve i brana na Svitavskoj akumulaciji (BiH), koje otežavaju migracije staklaste jegulje u uzvodna močvarna područja (područje Kuta i opuzenskih preostalih močvara i Svitavsku akumulaciju koja sama ima 1000 hektara površine). Dodatno je neretvanska populacija izložena i snažnom zagađenju pesticidima i herbicidima u cijelom području.

Osim toga, u Europu je 1980-ih iz Azije unesen i jedan parazit na jeguljama. Parazit,Anguillicoloidescrassus se naseli u ribljem mjehuru, nakon čega ga probija i parazitira u želudačnoj šupljini. Smatra se da on otežava migratorni put odrasle jegulje u Sargaško more. Recentnim monitoringom koji na području delte provodi Sveučilište u Dubrovniku, ovaj parazit je pronađen na svim staništima, pri čemu ga je najmanje utvrđeno kod jegulja iz lagune Parila, a najviše kod jegulje iz Baćinskih jezera.
Populaciju jegulje u neretvanskom slivu ima specifičan karakter jer naseljava i dalmatinske i hercegovačke vode, a posebice je značajna u močvarnom području Hutova blata u Čapljini, Norinu i Kutima u području Metkovića, laguni Parila kod Ploča, Baćinskim jezerima i Desanskom jezeru.
Po povijesnim podacima u hrvatskom dijelu delte se u razdoblju prije melioracija lovilo i do 150 tona godišnje (75 tona službeni otkup, ostatak privatni ulov), a u hutovskom području do 50 tona godišnje. Izvršenim melioracija u svim močvarnim područjima, godišnji ulovi su krajem sedamdesetih pali na tridesetak tona, što je u skladu s preostalim močvarnim površinama. Današnja ukupni ulovi se procjenjuje na manje od deset tona godišnje u cijeloj delti Neretve, od kojih se do 2 tone ulovi koncesioniranim jesenskim ribolovom, a ostali dio takozvanim tradicionalnim i nereguliranim ribolovom, uglavnom nelegalnim i štetnim vršama.

- Jegulja je najznačajniji i najpoznatiji neretvanski ribarstveni resurs. Osnovni je sastojak neretvanskoga brudeta koji je najvažnija karika gastronomske i turističke ponude delte Neretve. Kao takva je pored malostonske kamenice i najpoznatiji prehrambeni „brand“ Županije Dubrovačko-neretvanske. Status populacije je danas nepoznat, a istraživanjima jegulje u Hrvatskoj se zadnji put bavio dr.sc.Tonko Šoljan za vrijeme Nezavisne Države Hrvatske, kada je 1943. godine u Opuzenu oformljena Ribarstvena stanica, te dr.sc. Dinko Morović koji je nakon tih istraživanja objavio knjigu „Čudesni život jegulje“, 1976. Godine. Zadnjih pedeset godina se uglavnom uzima „zdravo za gotovo“, te je na svim razinama istraživanja u RH zanemarena vrsta. U istraživanjima u Hutovu blatu (BiH) je utvrđeno da je populacija u usporedbi s 1950-im godinama smanjenja za 90 posto, pojasnio je ekspert za jegulje dr. Branko Glamuzina u intervju za Slobodnu Dalmaciju.

Mnogo je razloga za opadanje brojnosti jegulje, od kojih su najvažniji gubitak staništa, prepreke za migracije, promjene uvjeta u oceanima, predatorstvo, zagađenje, bolesti i paraziti i preveliki izlovi. Gubitak staništa je svakako najznačajniji na primjeru melioracije močvara ispod Opuzena koje su bile i najznačajnije lovište u donjoj Neretvi. Na području Hutova blata kod Čapljine je nekadašnja močvara površine 6000 hektara smanjena na današnjih samo 600 hektara močvarnih površina. Od prepreka migracijama u delti Neretve su najznačajnije brana na ušću Male Neretve i brana na Svitavskoj akumulaciji (BiH), koje otežavaju migracije staklaste jegulje u uzvodna močvarna područja (područje Kuta i opuzenskih preostalih močvara i Svitavsku akumulaciju koja sama ima 1000 hektara površine). Dodatno je neretvanska populacija izložena i snažnom zagađenju pesticidima i herbicidima u cijelom području.

Osim toga, u Europu je 1980-ih iz Azije unesen i jedan parazit na jeguljama. Parazit,Anguillicoloidescrassus se naseli u ribljem mjehuru, nakon čega ga probija i parazitira u želudačnoj šupljini. Smatra se da on otežava migratorni put odrasle jegulje u Sargaško more. Recentnim monitoringom koji na području delte provodi Sveučilište u Dubrovniku, ovaj parazit je pronađen na svim staništima, pri čemu ga je najmanje utvrđeno kod jegulja iz lagune Parila, a najviše kod jegulje iz Baćinskih jezera.
Populaciju jegulje u neretvanskom slivu ima specifičan karakter jer naseljava i dalmatinske i hercegovačke vode, a posebice je značajna u močvarnom području Hutova blata u Čapljini, Norinu i Kutima u području Metkovića, laguni Parila kod Ploča, Baćinskim jezerima i Desanskom jezeru.
Po povijesnim podacima u hrvatskom dijelu delte se u razdoblju prije melioracija lovilo i do 150 tona godišnje (75 tona službeni otkup, ostatak privatni ulov), a u hutovskom području do 50 tona godišnje. Izvršenim melioracija u svim močvarnim područjima, godišnji ulovi su krajem sedamdesetih pali na tridesetak tona, što je u skladu s preostalim močvarnim površinama. Današnja ukupni ulovi se procjenjuje na manje od deset tona godišnje u cijeloj delti Neretve, od kojih se do 2 tone ulovi koncesioniranim jesenskim ribolovom, a ostali dio takozvanim tradicionalnim i nereguliranim ribolovom, uglavnom nelegalnim i štetnim vršama.

- Jegulja je najznačajniji i najpoznatiji neretvanski ribarstveni resurs. Osnovni je sastojak neretvanskoga brudeta koji je najvažnija karika gastronomske i turističke ponude delte Neretve. Kao takva je pored malostonske kamenice i najpoznatiji prehrambeni „brand“ Županije Dubrovačko-neretvanske. Status populacije je danas nepoznat, a istraživanjima jegulje u Hrvatskoj se zadnji put bavio dr.sc.Tonko Šoljan za vrijeme Nezavisne Države Hrvatske, kada je 1943. godine u Opuzenu oformljena Ribarstvena stanica, te dr.sc. Dinko Morović koji je nakon tih istraživanja objavio knjigu „Čudesni život jegulje“, 1976. Godine. Zadnjih pedeset godina se uglavnom uzima „zdravo za gotovo“, te je na svim razinama istraživanja u RH zanemarena vrsta. U istraživanjima u Hutovu blatu (BiH) je utvrđeno da je populacija u usporedbi s 1950-im godinama smanjenja za 90 posto, pojasnio je ekspert za jegulje dr. Branko Glamuzina u intervju za Slobodnu Dalmaciju.
